COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Austintown Baptist Church held its free dinner on Jan. 1 at 1180 S Raccoon Rd and now invites everyone to join the free meal on the first Thursday of each month. Pastor Charles Homa said the event, which once ran just a few times a year, will become more frequent as community lines extend.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Auditions for the play Silent Sky will be held at Hopewell Theatre on Jan. 15 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Jan. 17 from 1 to 5 p.m. at 702 Mahoning Ave in Youngstown; the play is based on 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt and requires four women and one man.  The Vindicator
  • Mahoning Valley cultural events feature a range of art exhibits and performances. For example, Floating Beauty runs at the Hoyt in New Castle until Jan. 29 and Butler Institute of American Art shows a Robert Rauschenberg tribute through Sunday, with museums and galleries also hosting events in the region.  Tribune Chronicle
  • United Returning Citizens hosted a Kwanzaa celebration Tuesday evening at 611 Belmont Ave. (near downtown) where Joy DeGruy and other community speakers discussed multigenerational trauma, healing through key Kwanzaa symbols, and the ongoing impact of historical oppressions, with support from local organizations.  The Vindicator
  • Auditions for the musical Deer Camp run 2–4 p.m. on Jan. 11 and 6:30–8:30 p.m. on Jan. 13 at Trumbull New Theatre, 5883 Youngstown-Warren Road in Niles; actors must sing 16 bars and meet the requirement for four men roles.  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio schools must enforce new rules restricting student cell phone use during school hours to limit distractions and support mental health today. Local districts in Mahoning and Trumbull counties may choose to ban or restrict devices — with exemptions for medical needs — following a state law passed in 2024.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio Turnpike raised tolls today for a standard car with E-ZPass costing 7.3 cents per mile and cash users paying 10.6 cents, with a full trip costing $19 and $27.75 respectively. Pennsylvania will raise tolls by 4% on Jan. 4 to fund road upkeep and debt repayments.  WFMJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • A teen from Greene County died from the flu as hospitals in Mahoning (34 people), Trumbull (17 people) and Columbiana (4 people) counties reported rising cases last week. Health officials urge residents to get vaccinated and practice good hygiene.  WFMJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Oakland outshot YSU in a close Horizon League match at Zidian Family Arena, hitting 55.3% overall for an 85-83 win — handing YSU its third straight league loss. YSU will face Northern Kentucky at 4 p.m. on Sunday to try and turn the tide.  The Vindicator
