COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Members of the Northwest Neighborhood Association received an update on a proposed waterway trail along the Mahoning River at Grace Methodist Church on Monday. Urban planner Katie Phillips said funding will decide which trail sections are prioritized, and officials expect to complete the connections between riverfront parks by October 2026.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Following its final Sunday Mass, St. Brendan Parish introduced an 80-page commemorative book that chronicles 102 years of community memories (including photographs and stories) as the parish merged with St. Mary Magdalene Parish on Jan. 1.   • The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley awarded over $700K in grants on Tuesday, Jan. 6 to support local projects (including a school library and advocacy work); applications for the next grant cycle are accepted until Jan. 15.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Foxconn posted its highest-ever fourth-quarter revenue in 2025 due to strong AI product demand, with a 22% increase over last year. The company partnered with SoftBank to build modular data centers at its Lordstown plant (part of the national Stargate project) and expects a boost in Q1 sales.  WFMJ
  • America Makes, the national accelerator for additive manufacturing based in downtown Youngstown, announced over $1 million to standardize laser-based 3D printing safety for U.S. and U.K. militaries — a project led by Lockheed Martin, Eaton Corporation, and ASTM International — that will unify production standards.  WFMJ
  • Township trustees approved a zoning change on Monday in Austintown that allows 7 Brew Coffee to build a 510 sqft drive-thru stand at the corner of Mahoning and Howard avenues – the new facility will open once weather permits work to begin and plans include hiring 40 to 50 employees.  The Vindicator

  • Westminster College's Foster Art Gallery will host If I Could, a free ceramic exhibition featuring works by YSU alum Leah Sydney from January 12 through February 6; the gallery will also hold an artist talk on January 15 (12:45 to 1:45 p.m.) in Patterson Hall.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lit Youngstown accepts free registrations for 9th Winter Writing Camp on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) Main Branch, which will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and feature separate tracks and lunch from Aladdin's Eatery; young children will require adult supervision.  WFMJ
  • At Monday’s board meeting, Howland High School principal Joseph Simko detailed plans to expand parent-teacher conferences, add courses such as American Sign Language and college readiness training, and adjust class sizes to boost state report card scores—efforts driven by positive feedback from parents and students.  Tribune Chronicle

  • The Ohio State Highway Patrol advises drivers to slow down and allow extra travel time during winter conditions as increased crashes on snowy roads prompt caution. Motorists are urged to carry a winter kit (ice scraper, shovel, jumper cables) for emergencies while traveling locally.  WFMJ
