COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Humane agents from the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County rescued 17 abandoned dogs and puppies from unsanitary conditions (with almost no food and only one with water) while the investigation into their placement continues.  WFMJ
  • The City of Girard is working to solve concerns about up to 20 stray cats seen on Prospect Street and in Parkwood, which residents say are fed by locals. City officials, including the mayor and councilmen, are meeting with county and animal clinics to search for a solution but have not finalized plans.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Robins Theatre in downtown Warren has announced its 2026 season featuring rock anthems, tribute bands, and classic voices with shows starting Saturday, Jan. 17 and continuing through April 11 (including acts like Jay and The Americans and Queen Nation).  WFMJ
  • This weekend and Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day events are scheduled in Warren and Youngstown. Saturday features a reading at Triyounity Health, Sunday hosts interfaith services at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church and St. James Church, and Monday features workshop at First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown with Tom Roberts as keynote.  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Mahoning County Prosecutor's Office will offer a free seven-week legal course called People’s Law School. It will run Tuesday evenings from Feb. 10 to Mar. 31 (skipping Mar. 17) at the Main Branch of the Public Library at 305 Wick Avenue.  WFMJ
  • At Monday’s board meeting, Superintendent Brian Knight read a resolution naming January School Board Recognition Month to honor local board members and the board approved using the Liberty Youth Recreation and Impact Center (May 5, Aug. 4 and Nov. 3) as the polling place for upcoming elections.  The Vindicator
  • Nearly 50 Hubbard High School students in the Future Educators of America program delivered thank you letters and T-shirts to 30 teachers during homeroom after the new year break, including Hubbard Elementary teacher Heather Williams, to show their appreciation and inspire future educators.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Boardman trustees approved new parking rules and a Community Reinvestment Area on Monday for Dick’s House of Sport at the former Kmart site—measures designed to streamline processes and support local development. They also appointed new board leadership and passed levy renewals to boost township operations.  The Vindicator
  • Township trustees in Hubbard approved purchasing 250 tons of salt at $79.14 a ton — an effort to secure 18 road passes before forecasted snow, while Liberty officials reported using 700 tons and plan extra orders to keep roads safe.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Ohio DNR is expected to provide $75,000 to Trumbull County to reimburse funds for phase IV of the Western Reserve Greenway Bike Trail project connecting Warren and Niles. The grant will cover a portion of county costs for improvements along the 16.7-mile trail that supports biking+walking.  The Vindicator

  • State Rep. Lauren McNally announced that Mahoning County Health Department will soon receive $440K from the Ohio Commission on Minority Health to support its Pathways Community HUB Model that connects health workers & high-risk mothers to prevent infant mortality.  WFMJ
