CULTURE NEWS

  • Y-Live 2026 returns to Stambaugh Stadium — an upcoming music event featuring local performers, as announced on Jan. 21 that will provide a vibrant evening for the community.  WFMJ
  • Akron-area children's entertainer Mr. Jeff will perform a high-energy brunch show Sunday at Westside Bowl in Youngstown at 11:30 a.m. Tickets cost $22.50 and are available in advance (via Eventbrite).  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The district plan is underway as phase 1 runs until March and will combine Chaney and East high and middle schools on the East Side while Youngstown Rayen schools stay at Chaney's current location. Future phases will cover staffing, building moves, and office relocations ahead of the 2026-27 school year.  The Vindicator
  • On Thursday, OSU Extension Mahoning County in Canfield hosted a funding resource session for farmers facing high costs and weak crop prices (admission $5). The series continues with sessions on farm succession planning on Feb. 26, local foods on March 26, and invasive species management on April 23.  WFMJ
  • Mahoning Valley school districts received grants to upgrade school bus safety. The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce allocated over $10 million to 31 local districts among 371 recipients statewide + funds will be used to add advanced safety features to buses.  WFMJ
  • Mahoning Valley students can apply for scholarships until March 1 via the CFMV website + the program will provide financial support to ease education costs.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Trumbull County MetroParks approved seeking proposals from nonprofits and political subdivisions to donate or sell a log cabin and timber on Nelson Moser Road in Braceville, meeting Ohio Revised Code limits. They will post details on social media and local newspaper, and selected groups must remove the cabin by summer.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Air Force veteran Matthew Dubon becomes executive dog warden for the Trumbull County dog pound starting Monday after commissioners selected him from nearly 90 applicants. Dubon will assist in selecting a deputy and planning a location for the pound, and he is set to leave his rubber company job.  Tribune Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mercy Health Rehab Hospital was ranked in the top 1% of 892 inpatient rehab facilities in the nation for cases discharged between Oct. 2024 and Sept. 2025, underscoring its strong commitment to quality patient care.  WFMJ
  • Trumbull County reported 54 overdose deaths in 2025, the lowest since tracking began in 2017, with numbers down from 61 in 2024 and 112 in 2023. Health officials credit wider access to Narcan kits and additional outreach for the drop—community efforts that may help reduce future overdoses.  WFMJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cris Carroll recorded career highs of 34 points and eight 3-pointers when YSU beat Green Bay 88-81 at Zidian Family Arena Thursday, snapping a seven-game Horizon League skid. YSU (Penguins) will host Milwaukee Saturday at 1 p.m. at the arena.  Tribune Chronicle
