COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Hartford Community Park Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the township administration building to request volunteer ideas for new community planning. Residents interested in shaping local park events are encouraged to attend.  Tribune Chronicle
  • A Niles resident raised concerns at a recent city council meeting about children playing in the streets and disrespecting seniors, urging officials to provide safe play areas. Council discussed plans for an outdoor basketball hoop at Waddell Park and playground renovations to encourage safe youth activities.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Amateur radio operators from the Warren Amateur Radio Association gathered over the weekend at the Stevens Park cabin in Niles to test emergency communications gear in cold weather. They repaired a 25-year-old tower and made contacts across the country and abroad.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Several fish fry events will offer fried fish options during Lent, with Daddy D’s BBQ in Youngstown serving meals from Feb. 20 through April 3 and other local churches and community groups hosting similar dinners (email [email protected] to add a listing).  WFMJ
  • Kavon Birchfield of Youngstown used his shovel to free a stuck driver at Belmont and Granada avenues on Monday morning after about a foot of snow fell. He had set out to find salt and helped the same driver a second time.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Librarian Robin Unger will discuss the 85-year history of NASA Glenn Research Center at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library this Saturday, highlighting how Youngstown native James Modarelli created the famous logo while working at the facility. The event is part of the America250-Ohio program.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A USPS rep said that in parts of Mahoning Valley, mail will be delivered only in areas with clear roads due to the winter storm, so residents may see delays with essential items — safety practices are in effect.  WFMJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Following a winter storm, the American Red Cross faces a severe blood shortage — forcing cancellation of seven drives in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties and leaving over 250 pints uncollected. They offer a $20 e-gift card for donations from Jan. 26 to Feb. 28.  WFMJ
  • Liberty Local Schools bus driver Amy Ballard (20 years of service) will shave her head on Saturday, March 14 at Penguin City Brewery in downtown Youngstown to raise $2,500 for childhood cancer research at a St. Baldrick's event.  WFMJ
