COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Lakeview High's Tuesday basketball game, the community held a fundraiser for 13-year-old Jaxsen Morelli, who is in a medically induced coma after an accidental pellet gun injury. Donations and 50/50 raffle proceeds will help his recovery.  WFMJ
  • The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley mourned board member Kelly Long, who served since 2019 as an IEP specialist and fundraiser. Her work extended to inclusive programs like Miss Dana's Diamons (a cheerleading program) and the Walnut Grove playground in Canfield.  WFMJ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters responded Tuesday at 7 a.m. to an electrical outlet fire in a Beaver Township home during 3° weather; residents had evacuated and crews cut power to extinguish the flames with no injuries reported.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kimberly-Clark reported strong Q4+full-year sales as it advances its $800 million facility in Warren, creating 500+ local jobs. Construction is set to finish within three years.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown got a state grant to launch an exhibition honoring its founder that features art from the museum’s 1919 opening and works from his memoir. A soft opening is in place now and the formal exhibit will open March 26.  The Vindicator
  • Downtown Youngstown Partnership and Youngstown CityScape are hosting First Fridays, For the Love of Dance on Feb. 6 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. downtown — at Ballet Western Reserve and Concept Studio, where free dance classes, live shows and a vendor market will bring together all ages.  WFMJ
  • The Tyler History Center in Youngstown is closed due to heating issues (since Tuesday, Jan. 27) as an HVAC team works to restore the heat; no reopening date is set.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Margie Petrunia, a 31-year library aide at Lakeview schools, (selected by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce as Ohio RISE Employee of the Year) is now a national finalist for the RISE Award; her district celebrated her at an assembly last week as she continues to support community programs.  Tribune Chronicle
  • YSU nursing students (56 total) lost critical clinical hours in December when their agreement with Mercy Health and Bel-Park ended, putting graduation progress at risk. The program is now working with accredited institutions to secure new hands-on training opportunities.  WFMJ
  • At Monday's meeting, the Board of Education approved adding flag football for high school girls starting this spring after more than 20 students expressed interest, and a memorandum with Champion Education Association secures new coach roles. The state has sanctioned a girls flag football championship for the season (OHHSAA).  Tribune Chronicle
  • Local school districts in Trumbull and Mahoning counties and the Lake to River region received over $1 million from the Ohio School Bus Safety Grant Program to upgrade bus safety equipment — the grants are part of a $10 million state budget effort to enhance student transportation.  The Vindicator

  • The JACBCC mobile mammography unit will travel across the valley in February to offer screening services at multiple locations including Salem Primary Care - patients should ask their doctors about when to get a screening.  WFMJ
  • The Ohio State Fire Marshal warns home oxygen users not to smoke or use open flames after 51 fire-related deaths since 2022, advising those in Mahoning Valley to turn off oxygen, remove equipment + install thermal fuses as frigid weather heightens fire risks.  WFMJ
