COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A treasure hunt will take place in Newton Falls this March to drive foot traffic downtown, local business owners say. They hope the hidden prize—either gold, silver, or cash—will boost business during a hard winter season.  WFMJ
  • Habitat for Humanity of the Mahoning Valley is accepting applications for new homes, with a priority project set to start soon in Warren & additional homes later in Mahoning County. Applicants must meet income, residency, and education requirements to qualify for an affordable mortgage plan.  WFMJ
  • Fire officials warn that hydrants in Brookfield, Austintown and Boardman may be blocked by snow or shrubs, risking delays in water supply during emergencies. Residents are urged to clear a three-foot area around hydrants safely (a contest via Facebook with a Walmart $100 gift card is boosting efforts).  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Shareholders approved Kimberly-Clark's deal to acquire Kenvue as the company builds a manufacturing and distribution center in Warren. The move — which still requires government approval — will combine operations for a business focused on health and wellness, with finalization expected in the second half of 2026.  WFMJ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ohio reported 6,853 new unemployment claims filed from Jan. 18 to Jan. 24, a rise of 20 claims from the previous week, along with a drop in continued claims by 870 that brought the total to 72,214. The figures came from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.  The Vindicator
  • America Makes announced two projects totaling $8M to boost additive manufacturing for defense and industry; the $6M PADAM 2.0 project will improve high-temperature alloy performance while the $2M AIM-4AM project will develop an AI framework (in partnership with NCDMM).  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At last week's Hubbard board meeting, elementary leaders reported on the new Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts reading program that uses Lexia and Acadience to track progress and adjust lessons, with test data showing improved scores among third graders.  Tribune Chronicle

  • Trumbull County MetroParks held its board meeting Thursday at the park offices in Howland, where the board named new leaders, approved contract adjustments, and set recurring meeting times + discussed plans for upcoming community events.  Tribune Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • A severe 35% drop in blood supply from cancelled drives due to winter weather and flu led donors to support a drive at YSU on Thursday, and urgent donations are needed today at Boardman Hospital (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) with another planned Saturday at Penguin City Brewing.  The Vindicator
