  • Sweet Memories Vintage Tees and Handel’s Ice Cream announced a partnership to support Akron Children’s with a joint fundraising effort. The collaboration will begin Feb. 6 during the store’s three-year anniversary celebration — debuting a special T-shirt line with a buy one, get two free offer and a donation to the hospital.  WFMJ
  • Downtown Youngstown heats up with the Toughest Monster Truck Tour at the Covelli Centre starting Friday at 7:30 p.m. with a second show Saturday at 3 p.m., and the Rotary Club’s Groundhog Beerfest opens Saturday at Stambaugh Auditorium (featuring two tasting sessions and live entertainment) to benefit local nonprofits.  WFMJ
  • Mary Anne Russo retired from Hubbard Public Library after 37 years as a children’s librarian on Friday. The beloved staff member transformed the kids’ area with creative programs and a toy lending library, and local attendees honored her legacy + shared memories at her retirement celebration.  The Vindicator

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lit Youngstown hosted its annual winter gathering Friday at Culturati Studios, 350 E Federal from 7 to 9 p.m. The event included readings by Kortney Morrow and Philip Terman, live jazz by the Catro Trio, a costume contest, plus cocktails and mocktails from celebrity bartenders John Noga and Jimmy Sutman.  WFMJ
  • Throughout February, Black History Month events will feature a range of cultural programs across the Mahoning Valley (including art lectures, a free concert at Christ Episcopal Church, and a heritage marketplace at Youngstown State University’s Beeghly Hall) that celebrate African-American achievements.  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At its January meeting in Canfield, the Educational Service Center of Eastern Ohio appointed Alexa Sweeney Blackann to the MCCTC board, and she brings leadership from business and community groups to boost career and technical education in Mahoning County.  The Vindicator
  • The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is accepting scholarship applications for its 2026 awards, with eligible high school and college students urged to complete one universal application by March 1 (CFMV.org/scholarships) to qualify for multiple scholarships.  The Vindicator
  • Carolynn Coonce (a 2025 TCTC graduate) is studying mechanical engineering technology at Kent State Trumbull and will graduate in 2027. She built her HVAC-R skills through hands-on training and work with her uncle while balancing coursework and scholarships.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Alliance City School District volunteers helped clear sidewalks and bus stops today after a middle school principal raised concerns over unsafe waiting conditions, Superintendent Rob Gress said.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local leaders from Campbell, Struthers and Lowellville met at Collingwood Center - sharing community plans. Lowellville’s mayor said Riverfront Park will finish by May after a dam removal spurred growth, while Campbell and Struthers officials outlined park, road and downtown upgrades, and school leaders detailed new STEAM programs.  The Vindicator

  • Southern Park Mall owners sold a 1.13-acre parcel to FIDC 184 LLC (Cocca Development) for $350,000 on Jan. 23 in Boardman. The sale price is nearly $70,000 below the appraised value of the undeveloped lot at the mall’s southwest corner.  The Vindicator
