CRIME NEWS

  • Warren authorities have filed two charges against Robert Mealy for allegedly beating a three-month-old puppy named Decoy who suffered eye and leg injuries that required hospital care; the shelter now searches for a temporary medical foster.  WFMJ

  • On Wednesday night at St. Charles Church in Boardman, the Mahoning County Chapter of the Genealogical Society met to share family artifacts and memories that bring local heritage to life. Members, including longtime historian David Burnham, discussed stories that reveal the rich connections behind everyday lives.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Farmers Trust Co. & YSU Foundation created the $1.5M William E. Maine Jr. Scholarship Fund to help Mahoning Valley students overcome financial barriers to higher education. The fund favors applicants with ties to Maine’s Masonic roots or waterskiing skills.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Canfield's city manager reported 13 waterline breaks during a cold snap, prompting staff to work up to 20 hours to control leaks; council set a Feb. 18 public hearing on a new ordinance for construction acceptance and bonding and reviewed proposals to revitalize the 200-acre Red Gate property for recreation.  The Vindicator
  • Village officials and residents in Lordstown oppose renewing the EPA permit for the Trumbull Energy Center to discharge 620,000 gallons daily into Mud Creek and demand using the local sanitary sewer system; nearly 100 people attended a public hearing Wednesday as officials warned the discharge could flood properties and harm livestock.  The Vindicator

  • Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel visited Champion Central Elementary School on Thursday morning to launch Round Two of the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge, a 30-day program where 1,356 schools and 391,000 students statewide work on cardio, strength and flexibility.  Tribune Chronicle

  • The Mahoning Valley Scrappers announced that Eastwood Field will be renamed '7 17 Credit Union Field at Eastwood' starting at the June 2 home game as part of its partnership with 7 17 Credit Union.   • Youngstown State women's basketball beat Milwaukee 79-48 at Beeghly Center after hitting 13 three-pointers in a big fourth-quarter run. The team, now 17-7, will face top-seed Green Bay Saturday at 2 p.m. in a No. 1 versus No. 2 conference matchup.  Tribune Chronicle
