  • 104-year-old Jefferson 'Jeff' Littell celebrated his birthday yesterday at Clearview Lantern Suites in Warren with family, friends, and local officials who honored his World War II service with commendations and a bluegrass jam, and he advised (Don't drink and don't smoke) for a long life.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Downtown Youngstown hosts multiple events this weekend with sports, arts and social gatherings. YSU features basketball, tennis and planetarium shows while local venues offer a Valentine’s Day pop-up, Bingo at DOPE Cider House and wrestling alongside breakfast and a Penguinito Bowl at Penguin City Brewing.  WFMJ
  • At a Tuesday meeting in Poland, Jeanne Rostan of the Poland Save Our Library Committee urged residents to support keeping the library branch. Council leaders (including Michael Thompson) said the board is weighing a repair option costing up to $8 million against a new construction costing $12.5 million.  The Vindicator
  • Trumbull County Public Employee Retirees hold a PERI meeting Wednesday at Shepherd of the Valley (4100 North River Road) with doors at 10:30 a.m., the meeting at 10:45, and a $10 luncheon after Belinda Weiss, director of the President William McKinley Memorial, discusses preserving local history.  Tribune Chronicle

  • 7 17 Credit Union secured naming rights to the new field at Eastwood and held a celebration at the Eastwood Event Centre on Thursday. The field will host the Scrappers' season opener on June 2 & serve as a hub for community events.  The Vindicator

CULTURE NEWS

  • Martha I. Pallante donated over $12,000 to launch the first endowment fund for the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor at a downtown kickoff last Friday. The fund will support ongoing museum operations, exhibits and research to preserve the region’s steel history.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Champion Central Elementary School’s fifth graders join a STEM Club to build windmills inspired by The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. Teachers Rebecca Baxter and David Murduck said the after-school program (supported by an Ohio Energy grant) helps students work together and solve challenges while learning NASA processes.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport will receive $5 million from federal appropriations next year to repair its runway and avoid closure, officials said. Trumbull and Mahoning counties also received funding for road safety, water upgrades, and sanitary improvements in Boardman, Struthers & Niles.  Tribune Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Boardman High School's Swim & Dive Team raised $2,000 for the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center during a 'Put a Cap on Cancer' meet this week, where fans and athletes wore pink to show support.  WFMJ

  • Property transfers recorded Jan. 26-30 span multiple local communities in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties (covering transactions from Austintown to Youngstown) with sale prices ranging from $23,000 to $825,000.  The Vindicator
  • Berlin Center could get its first Dollar General store as the Ohio EPA is reviewing a notice of intent to build a 9,100 sqft location on a 1.6-acre parcel south of Ohio Structures Inc. on State Route 534; the parcel has not yet been sold.  WFMJ
