- ➤ Struthers animal shelter is fundraising to move to a new facility because years of water damage and mold from a failing roof have limited space and increased repair costs. Donations will help pay for renovations and new construction to better serve animals. WFMJ
- ➤ Friendly Squares hosts a Valentine-themed square dance Saturday from 7:30 to 10 at Niles SCOPE Center (14 E. State St.) with Gene Hammond; McKinley Birthplace Museum and Memorial Library feature a Lacers of the Lake class (noon to 3) and Black Women’s Magic with Dr. Lindsey Stewart (Thursday at 2). - ➤ Gas prices in Youngstown and nearby areas rose by 8 cents this week to $2.847 per gallon on Monday, according to AAA East Central’s Gas Price Report, as winter storms lowered demand and refineries began switching to summer blend. - ➤ January auto sales in the valley fell 10.6% year-over-year as a deep freeze hurt business, though dealers in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties saw gains. - ➤ On Monday, Hilltop Elementary students used a Maryland radio station (supported by NASA) to talk live with astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The school will host a private Google Meet with astronaut John Shoffner next week to spark continued interest in space. WFMJ
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Monica Robb Blasdel was named Conservation Legislator of the Year by the Columbiana County Federation of Conservation Clubs — a group honoring efforts to protect natural resources — for her work to save outdoor traditions. - ➤ City officials in Girard reported 26 waterline breaks since Dec. 1 and said snow and ice on downtown sidewalks led to a man sliding under his car. - ➤ Youngstown’s 2025 income tax receipts declined 6.23% from last year but ranked as the city’s second-best on record due to stronger business profit and individual income growth; Finance Director Kyle Miasek said officials expect a 1.81% rise in 2026 as council reviews the upcoming budget.
