COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Valentine’s events enliven local venues: the McKinley Memorial Library in Niles hosts a book heart craft today from 5:30 to 7 p.m., the Warren-Trumbull Public Library holds a family drop-in Saturday, and a themed square dance, museum open houses, and a Feb. 20 rescue mission benefit dinner add to festivities.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Boardman Glenwood Jr. High has raised nearly $3,000 to support 7th grader Levi Kulikowsky, who is fighting a rare cancer and still taking saxophone lessons. The community designed a t-shirt with the message 'stand strong with Levi' (using Sparty as its mascot) and asks buyers to wear it today.  WFMJ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday morning, a two-story house at 30 W. Second St. in Girard was consumed by fire, forcing two adults and an infant to escape while firefighters prevented the flames from reaching a nearby home & attended to a firefighter’s minor knee injury.  The Vindicator

CULTURE NEWS

  • Parishioners gathered at Saint Columba Cathedral on Wednesday for the White Mass service that honors healthcare, mental health and healing workers (marking its 30th year) and remembering those in need of care.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Youngstown City School District Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor met with Gov. Mike DeWine Tuesday at Youngstown Rayen Early College High School to discuss removing the district from academic distress and backing Senate Bill 332 + House Bill 610, as graduation rates and math scores improve.  The Vindicator
  • Sean Barron, a correspondent for The Vindicator and Tribune Chronicle, was honored with an OSBA award for his fair and balanced education reporting during a recent meeting at Youngstown City School District; the framed certificate was signed by OSBA President Thomas Patterson and School Board President Juanita Walker.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Youngstown City Schools brought female students from East and Chaney middle schools together for the Valentine's Empowerment Expo at East Middle School, where music, activities, and a fashion show celebrated self-love and empowerment. The expo underscored the district's merger plans for the schools next year.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hubbard Township officials say groups buying Coalburg Lake now have two extra years to work on projects after dam removal is postponed to November 2028, while the Western Reserve Land Conservancy plans to apply for grant funds and schedule a cleanup day later this year.  The Vindicator
  • The Western Reserve Port Authority is pursuing commercial air service at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport and has appointed pilot Scott Lynn to its board, who will serve a four-year term starting Jan. 1 and ending Dec. 31.  WFMJ
  • The Ohio Senate passed Bill 216 to designate the portion of State Route 7 between Washington Boulevard and Western Reserve Road as the Clarence Sonny Smith Jr. Memorial Highway. The naming honors a Boardman native inducted into the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame and former Compco co-chairman.  WFMJ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Girard Planning Commission voted 5-0 to approve developer Altobelli's Maplewood Estates on a 21 acre site north of Girard pending plan revisions for council review in March; the project will offer 37 single family homes expected to be market ready by summer.  Tribune Chronicle
