  • Boardman Glenwood Junior High School held a fundraiser presentation Thursday morning in its gym to present an $8,927.48 check to Levi Kulikowsky's family battling a rare cancer. The t-shirt fundraiser highlighted school pride + community support.  WFMJ
  • McKinley Memorial Library holds a Presidents’ Day celebration Monday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Birthplace Home in Niles with historical tours. Today, Eastwood Mall and St. Joe’s host pet adoption and Valentine’s Day bingo events while a McKinley portrayal is scheduled in Bristol at 5 p.m. Monday.  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Youngstown resident Vince Shivers spoke at Braceville Township Hall this week, sharing years of research on the Underground Railroad and the local history of sites and resident calls linked to the escape of enslaved people. His investigation used community efforts and oral histories to verify past events.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Students at Boardman High School took part in Legacy Lockdown on Thursday to practice safe lockdown procedures and honor first responders (including police and firefighters) during a Spartan clap-out that builds trust between students and law enforcement.  WFMJ
  • Youngstown resident Vince Shivers presented researched Underground Railroad sites at Braceville Township Hall this week, sharing findings from his study and teaching at Youngstown State University. Over 30 community members learned about the area’s past and the ongoing effort to collect oral histories + preserve local heritage.  The Vindicator
  • Two educational service centers in Columbiana and Mahoning counties have been named Top Business Advisory Councils by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. The award recognizes their efforts to create career-focused opportunities for students by strengthening ties between education and local business.  WFMJ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists say genetic analysis may speed up the restoration of the iconic American chestnut tree. The new research is expected to boost conservation and reforestation plans in the region.  WFMJ

FINANCE NEWS

  • A Newton Falls woman won a $300,000 lottery jackpot after her husband bought her a scratch-off ticket as a birthday gift; the couple will use the winnings to pay off their home and vehicle.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The public library of Youngstown and Mahoning County trustees approved plans to relocate the old Struthers Branch to a new building downtown — the project will start with phase one in June near Yellow Creek Park and is expected to finish by January 2029.  WFMJ
  • Hubbard Township officials postponed demolition of Coalburg Lake Dam from summer 2024 to summer 2028 and are now exploring options (including renovation) to preserve its history cost-effectively.  WFMJ

  • In New Middletown, Western Reserve beat Springfield 56-52 in a triple-overtime game on Thursday at Springfield High School (Connor Cochran scored 23 points to help secure the win).  Tribune Chronicle
  • The Maplewood girls basketball team swept Chalker with a 51-25 win on Thursday in Southington, finishing the season sweep despite fatigue after a tough contest the night before. Coach Pykare praised the team’s rebounding and pressure defense — key factors in their success.  Tribune Chronicle
