COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ten community members were selected for the 24th Community Stars program — a Tribune Chronicle initiative recognizing outstanding volunteer service — with winners to be celebrated at an awards dinner on April 15 at the St. Demetrios Community Center in Warren.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Holly and Michael Guerrero from Howland will celebrate their 34th wedding anniversary later this month; their love story began in high school when a Tribune paperboy delivered Holly's handwritten number and Michael proposed with a quarter-page ad on June 22.  Tribune Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Trumbull County Historical Society was awarded $25,000 from the Raymond John Wean Foundation to purchase minority artifacts for its planned Museum of Science Fiction and Fantasy Arts in Warren, with the funds aimed at broadening the museum’s collection while other groups received grants for educational and community organizing projects.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four Destination Imagination teams from Willard PK-8 School will compete at the regional competition on Feb. 21 at Barberton High School. Teachers Nina Vaughn and Cara Meadows coach students—many new to DI—as they prepare plays and technical challenges that could advance them to state and global meets.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Canfield schools are in distress as the forecast shows deficit spending this year with losses continuing until 2028; board members will meet soon to plan revenue measures and invite community input.  The Vindicator
  • Youngstown City Schools reduced chronic absenteeism from 71% during the COVID surge to 57.9% last year and expect it to drop to around 54 or 55% this year (using an academic team and the Cleveland Browns' Stay in the Game network) to support students.  The Vindicator

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Youngstown’s winter is classified as extreme by the AWSSI (Accumulated Winter Season Severity Index), which measures cold temperatures, snowfall, and snow depth. The index shows the season has been the coldest in nearly 50 years and the snowiest in five, marking it as harsher than most winters in decades.  WFMJ

FINANCE NEWS

  • 7 17 Credit Union will merge with Geauga Credit Union on April 1, welcoming 6,500 new members and adding $108 million in assets as it plans to open four new branches in Northeast Ohio. Operational integration will occur in November + the merged credit union will serve over 130,000 members.  The Vindicator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The YMCA in downtown Youngstown restored heat today with its pools reopening after SOBE's receivership left many buildings cold. Officials from the Public Utilities Commission and city leaders are exploring long-term solutions to stabilize service.  WFMJ
  • Poland Board of Education member Greg Riddle proposed repurposing Poland Union School into high-end condos to turn its $100,000 yearly liability into a revenue-generating asset (rather than apartments) and will discuss details at the board meeting on Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. at Dobbins School.  The Vindicator

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Maplewood girls basketball team completed a season sweep by beating Chalker, 51-25, on Thursday in Southington. Coach Stephanie Pykare said her team overcame fatigue from a tough game last night and boosted their defense to prepare for the postseason.  The Vindicator
