COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Youngstown Skatepark Association partners with Penguin City Brewing Company to host a free pop-up skatepark event — the space will temporarily transform for skating — from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday at 460 E. Federal St.  The Vindicator
  • The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project shelter at 909 Martin Luther King Boulevard in Warren is offering a $750 reward for tips on three emaciated dogs taken in the last 24 hours, two from Warren + one from Brookfield. The shelter is now at capacity.  WFMJ
  • Animal Charity of Ohio hosted a dog adoption event Sunday at Southern Park Mall in Boardman where nearly two dozen shelter dogs were showcased for visitors who learned about pet care and the adoption process while supporting the charity with donations.  The Vindicator
  • Downtown business owners reported a surge in visitors on Valentine's Day weekend as Penguin City co-owner Aspasia Lyras-Bernacki noted increased teamwork with city officials, and owners expect more events (such as a Saint Patrick's Day bar crawl) to keep drawing people downtown.  WFMJ
  • Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County hosted its fourth annual Be Mine adoption event at Eastwood Mall on Friday and Saturday to honor Valentine’s Day, where several cats and dogs found new homes and volunteer Hunter Chaney was seen giving extra affection to a friendly St. Bernard mix.  Tribune Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • St. James Episcopal Church held its final worship service Sunday in Boardman after a 200-year run. Bishop Anne B. Jolly led the service, and items like the chalice and paten will be passed to other local churches (including one in downtown Youngstown).  The Vindicator
  • Black History Month events showcase local achievements across the Mahoning Valley — veteran tributes at the Warren Heritage Center Monday and Tuesday, a community reading of Toni Morrison’s Jazz at YSU Wednesday, a genealogy class at Howland Library Thursday, and cultural programs in Youngstown through Feb. 28.  The Vindicator
  • Seventeen Youngstown students from Inspiring Minds Youngstown Scholars showcased artwork + poetry at a Saturday reception at Michael Kusalaba Library on the West Side, and their work was set to remain on display throughout February for Black History Month.  The Vindicator
  • Trumbull County African Americans Achievers Association will induct six local leaders into its Hall of Fame in celebration of Black History Month on Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. at DiVieste’s Banquet Center. Rev. Todd Johnson of Second Baptist Church (A House of Hope) will speak at the event.  Tribune Chronicle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported inflation slowed to 2.4 percent as gas prices dropped and some groceries steadied — yet air fares and ticket prices edged up. Local experts say everyday costs in Youngstown still strain household budgets.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Howland SCOPE Center in Howland will host an artificial floral arranging session from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday with instructor Gail Hanes. The $30 fee (materials only) must be paid one week before the class.  Tribune Chronicle
  • On Saturday, Feb. 14, a local art show in Youngstown highlighted the value of education through creative exhibits by area artists and students. The event showcased how art can spark learning and bring community members together.  WFMJ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents along North Osborn, Mahoning and Oakwood Avenues have reported a strong, sulfur-like odor in recent weeks; Enbridge Gas Ohio responded with specialized equipment and said shifting winds from nearby industrial (wastewater treatment and oil recycling) facilities may be responsible, advising precautions if the smell persists.  WFMJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Steel Valley Pinball held its Sunday Classics Tournament at Past Times Arcade in Girard on Sunday. The event featured a 14-round match play qualifier for classic arcade games that predate the 1990s.  WFMJ
  • The Youngstown State women’s basketball team earned a 69-65 road win at IU Indy on Sunday — snapping an eight-game road slide and moving to a 19-8 overall record and 12-5 in conference play.  Tribune Chronicle
