  • At Second Baptist Church during a 'Night of Hope,' church leaders urged local residents to support safe foster homes in Trumbull County and explore options like adoption and mentorship, while officials previewed Kei'Mani's Law (a planned child welfare bill) to better track and respond to child abuse cases.  WFMJ
  • On Wednesday, Feb. 18, local animal control rescued 53 cats from an apartment hoarding situation in Youngstown (they were removed from unsafe conditions).  WFMJ
  • Local officials began preserving the historic covered bridge in Newton Falls on Wednesday, Feb. 18 — an effort aimed at maintaining its structure for future generations.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Butler Institute of American Art's search committee will begin interviewing candidates (via Zoom) in March to find a new executive director, with final candidates coming to Youngstown, interim director Larry W. Jones said that the search firm began accepting applications five weeks ago.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Tano Jones Revelry will perform at Brad's Savage Birthday Bash at Westside Bowl in Youngstown today at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $15 in advance and $20 at the door (the lineup includes The Shootouts, Rolling Box Car International and Bad Hooks).  The Vindicator
  • On Friday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m., the Beatles vs. Stones tribute show will take place at Robins Theatre in Warren as bands Satisfaction (The International Rolling Stones Show) and Abbey Road perform together; tickets start at $26.  WFMJ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ohio recorded 6,905 initial and 66,806 continued unemployment claims from Feb. 8 to 14, showing 1,051 and 1,062 fewer filings than the previous week + total claims reached 73,711.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mahoning County Extension of Ohio State University returns its Naturalist Series, hosting monthly talks on nature topics led by local experts at its Canfield office on the third Wednesday from February to October at 6:30 p.m. Sessions cost $5 or $30 for the full series.  WFMJ
  • More than 20 KSUT BSN students took part in a white coat ceremony earlier this week, marking the start of their nursing training. The event highlighted their commitment to compassionate patient care as they begin their future in health education.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Trumbull County commissioners passed a resolution Thursday allowing Commissioner Hernandez to sign an opioid settlement agreement that will provide funds for addiction recovery programs and law enforcement upgrades—though officials expect the award to be lower than the combined $2.5 million received last year. The funds support treatment services, jail equipment and community programs.  Tribune Chronicle
  • At Tuesday’s council meeting in Poland, officials approved plans to bury a time capsule during the December tree lighting at Village Hall — they also accepted a $475 bid for a 2009 Honda Sonata and will install a stop sign on a dead-end section of Sheridan Road.  The Vindicator
  • The Power Siting Board approved a plan by American Transmission Systems Inc. to build a new 138 kV electric transmission line connecting the Lincoln Park Substation + Riverbend Subs in Youngstown and Campbell, a step set to boost local power infrastructure.  WFMJ

  • Austintown Fitch lost 55 to 45 to Harding on Wednesday after a poor first half and a strong second half effort showed promise. The team now prepares for a postseason home game against North Royalton.  The Vindicator
