COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley has added three new board members—Ashley Douglas, Deonna Lampley and Julie Santha—to strengthen support for autistic individuals and families. The board, led by president Aundrea Cika Heschmeyer, will work with the new appointees and current officers to guide its mission.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Scout Alex Zedaker began work on refurbishing Poland Municipal Forest’s Indian Trail entrance as part of his Eagle Scout project when weather improved. He repaired split rail fencing, cleaned plaques (his work began Valentine’s Day weekend) and plans additional fundraising for needed materials.  The Vindicator
  • The Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley announced the 2026 H.O.P.E. honorees of Wine for Hope, scheduled for April 17 at Waypoint 4180 in Canfield. Six community leaders will be honored for their lifetime achievement and dedication to improving local quality of life.  Tribune Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • DownBeat Musical Arts Centre in Warren has opened its state-of-the-art rehearsal studio at 1171 E. Market St., available for local bands + touring acts. It will host a March 1 concert at St. Demetrios Community Center featuring emerging talent and professional mentoring.  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Struthers and Campbell boards of education met in February to approve financial reports, forecasts and a range of agreements, including college partnerships and safety programs (among other initiatives) while recognizing staff contributions and processing appointment and retirement motions to support their school systems.  The Vindicator
  • Dr. Amy Cossentino is appointed dean of YSU's Cliffe College of Creative Arts following former dean Phyllis Paul’s resignation; she began her role on February 2. She brings 35 years of higher education experience (including leadership of Experiential Learning and Engagement) to strengthen the college’s community ties.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • WRTA will start its new branding Monday with updates to social media and marketing, and will update station signage within six weeks. The new logo (with a green bus outline and arrow) highlights its commitment to free fares and a future of economic development and equality for riders.  WFMJ
  • The Village of Poland is accepting historic preservation grant applications from homeowners of properties 125+ years old until close of business Feb. 27 for exterior repairs and finishes — selections will be notified by Apr. 30 following review by the Architectural Review Board.  The Vindicator

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Campbell girls basketball team lost 50-33 to United in a Division VI sectional final in Hanoverton on Thursday. The game marked their first playoff appearance in two years (head coach Ashlyn Cleevely said the young team gained important experience).  The Vindicator
  • Lakeview's tough basketball secured a 49-32 win over Oberlin Firelands in a Division IV playoff game last Thursday in Cortland—Lakeview now prepares to face Parma Heights Holy Name on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the district semifinal.  The Vindicator
  • Hilary Knight was surprised when teammates named her Team USA's flagbearer for the 2026 Milan Cortina Closing Ceremony, and the honor will spotlight her role in the upcoming games.  WFMJ
  • The YSU women's basketball team earned a 75-55 win against NKU on Thursday in Kentucky, reaching 20 wins for the first time since the (2021 to 22) season. They will play their final road game Saturday against Purdue Fort Wayne before hosting Detroit Mercy on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.  The Vindicator
