COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Rose Catholic Church hosted its first Chili Cook-Off in years on Sunday at Rosetta Hall. The event in Girard included a bake-off and a chance to win a $150 Giant Eagle gift card, drawing the congregation and community together.  WFMJ
  • The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation is closely watching U.S. and Israeli military efforts against Iran amid concerns over nuclear and missile programs. Federation leaders say they hope diplomacy will ease tensions and have increased security to protect the community.  The Vindicator
  • Residents in Niles will celebrate at Ciminero’s Banquet Centre on March 14 starting at 5:30 p.m. for the annual St. Stephen Luck of the Irish Celebration that features a reverse raffle with over $6,000 in cash prizes, live music, and a buffet dinner with tickets required.  Tribune Chronicle

  • HardBody Fitness will open at 23 West Boardman Street next week if inspections pass; the new gym offers classes + personal training and plans to add a juice and smoothie bar later.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mahoning Valley Irish Festival held its 2nd Annual Sound Check Sunday at Double Bogey's in Boardman & featured live Irish music and dance along with local vendors and food. The event previewed St. Patrick's festivities and supported community causes.  WFMJ
  • Lit Youngstown held its ninth annual Winter Writing Camp on Saturday at the main branch of the Public Library, offering free creative writing workshops in poetry, fiction, memoir and publishing for ages 5 through adults—capped by a catered lunch, a wedding cookie table and an open mic session.  The Vindicator
  • The Trumbull County Historical Society launches a weekly series for Women’s History Month today by highlighting pioneer Zella McBerty, who began working at Packard Lamp Factory in Mineral Ridge (her birthplace) and later helped run a major electrical firm in Warren. EDUCATION NEWS

  • East High athletic director Tanisha Franklin said last week that Boise-based On Time Sports Co. supplied custom T-shirts featuring the Golden Bears logo and sponsor spaces to boost school pride and safety. Next year, the shirts will sport a new logo for the upcoming Youngstown High School Defenders (reconfiguration plan in progress).  The Vindicator
  • Youngstown youth joined a Black History Month workshop Saturday morning at 611 Belmont Ave. hosted by the Kool Boiz Foundation, where simple lessons on good leadership were shared through stories of John Lewis, Tristan Walker, and Mark E. Dean.  The Vindicator
  • Lakeview schools remain stable today but face future revenue loss if county tax rollbacks are expanded, potentially reducing funding by over $212,000 and leading to a $149,000 deficit in fiscal year 2027. District officials plan job cuts and expense shifts to manage the shortfall.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Forty-one educators nominated from Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties will be honored Tuesday at Eastwood Event Centre in Niles (including five special awards) as part of the second annual Mahoning Valley Educator of the Year Honors Dinner organized by local teacher Josh MacMillan and supported by the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber.  The Vindicator
