COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Second Harvest Food Bank will host its Feed the Need Fun Run on May 16 at Firestone Farms (101 Town Center Ave, Columbiana) with $10 registration from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Bring a food item for a prize drawing; separate kids and adult runs start later with an awards ceremony.  WFMJ
  • Local members can receive free prom and homecoming dresses at Champion High School on March 9 and 10 through the GFWC Ohio Warren Junior Women’s League; a crystals talk is set for Thursday at 6 p.m. in Niles, and Farm Bureau youth scholarship applications are due by March 15.  Tribune Chronicle
  • At the Liberty Youth Recreation and Impact Center, a fallen volleyball post shut down the gym for a few days last week as officials worked to ensure safety. School leaders will gather details and consider roof and gym floor repairs to keep the center ready as a community space.  Tribune Chronicle

  • Zombie Dogz & Piez will open its first Mahoning Valley location Tuesday, Mar. 10 at 4 p.m. at Hollywood Gaming Casino and Racecourse in Austintown, replacing the former Wahlburgers spot and serving gourmet hot dogs, tacos, slushies, and personal pizzas.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Women’s History Month begins this week with the national theme 'Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,' honoring pioneers including Catherine Dougherty Hillman, Margaret Van Horn Dwight, Mary Ann Campana, and Harriet Taylor Upton who helped build our community – an effort to show how perseverance shaped history.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LaBrae High School will host a fun day event this Saturday that features games, crafts, a movie, and food as students encourage smart choices, with junior Riley Rowe working on a craft alongside Parker Yartz (9) and Faith Detweiler (7).  Tribune Chronicle
  • Newton Falls Board of Education began searching for a new school treasurer using help from Shared Services Alliance. Board President Tonya Kline said the board will interview three candidates Thursday while interim treasurer Alan Boone continues his part-time duties until a hire is made.  Tribune Chronicle
  • At Thursday’s school board meeting, officials approved a $93,000 bus safety grant, a $1.04 million special education program, and a $19,950 agreement with Tru Green Commercial for school maintenance. They also scheduled a cheerleading team recognition at Eastwood Mall on March 18 and a community STEM Night at the high school on March 24.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Springfield Local High School's drone program got a $500 donation from the Springfield Optimist Club on Thursday, Feb. 26. Senior club member Donald Marsco presented the funds that bought new MacBooks for simulator training and iMovie production, and assistant treasurer Joe Merson seeks more grant funding to support the program.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Candidate David Pepper met with local healthcare providers on Monday in Youngstown to discuss rising costs after last January's subsidy expirations (he noted many Ohioans are struggling with higher fees) as he and Dr. Amy Acton promote plans to lower expenses.  WFMJ
  • Austintown Township trustees are set to discuss funding cuts to the student media program (only used about 15 times a year) as Chair Bruce Shepas said the expense is no longer justified.  WFMJ
  • Mahoning County commissioners approved $100k in opioid settlement funds for workforce program Flying HIGH to build a 60 ft square addition at its Molina Training Center at 1414 Kensington Ave on the North Side; the expansion (expected in May) will help residents earn skilled trades credentials and access jobs.  The Vindicator

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cadence Care Network reopened its Boardman facility (4822 Market Street, Suite 300) on Monday, March 2 to launch expanded mental health services for children and families amid rising referrals. CEO Matt Kresic said new upstairs spaces will allow on-site and home visits for therapy.  WFMJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • The YSU women’s basketball team earned Horizon League honors yesterday after ending the season with nine wins in their last 10 games. Sophia Gregory received Defensive Player of the Year, Paulina Hernandez won Sixth Player of the Year, and teammates Casey Santoro and Sarah Baker were named to all-league teams.  Tribune Chronicle
