BUSINESS NEWS

  • 7/17 Credit Union plans to expand into Summit County by opening two new branches in Akron this spring. The Wallhaven branch will open on April 6 and a downtown branch will debut later as the credit union prepares to launch its Ohio Strong program.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Youngstown State University will host free Women’s History Month events in March including a trivia challenge, art presentation, reenactment and clothing swap at venues like Penguin City Brewing Co. & local centers. The program honors women’s contributions and offers both in-person and virtual engagements to spur community learning.  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Mahoning County Bar Association Foundation is accepting law school scholarship applications from Valley students — awards range from $1,000 to $2,000 and applications must be submitted by May 16 via email or mailed to 114 East Front Street in Youngstown.  WFMJ
  • Residents and school staff in Poland praised former superintendent Craig Hockenberry, who retired for health reasons, and shared hopes for improved communication from the new candidate among three finalists. The board will meet on Wednesday, March 11 to decide, with residents emphasizing communication + openness.  WFMJ
  • Cardinal Mooney students won an MIT-led engineering competition at the Alliance for Working Together Foundation headquarters in Mentor — they built a gas turbine and took part in a Lego-themed manufacturing activity to learn real-world engineering concepts.  WFMJ
  • The Youngstown City School District announced its 2026 Youngstown Honors Award recipients who will be recognized at a ticketed gathering at the Maronite Center on May 7 beginning at 5 p.m. The awards honor dedicated educators and staff who support students across the district.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Champion Township Fire Department detailed its new mutual aid policy today. The policy will assess calls and charge neighbors only when staffing is low, and township trustees plan a meeting by the end of March to discuss further solutions.  WFMJ
  • At a recent Liberty trustees meeting, Fire Chief Doug Theobald honored township first responders for their lifesaving work during a June 7 explosion — awarding police and firefighters who secured the scene and treated victims promptly.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Mahoning County officials and judges will join Justice Evelyn Stratton in an online forum Thursday to address reforms linking mental health care and criminal justice, aiming to reduce jail reliance. The three-hour Zoom call will share insights from state agencies and experts with The Ohio Project.  The Vindicator
  • City officials spent $2,000 to work with Steel Valley Spay and Neuter on capturing dozens of feral cats in Girard—16 pregnant—while Mayor Mark Zuppo meets local leaders about party houses and a direct care facility; meetings are set for March 18 in Struthers and March 23 in Girard.  The Vindicator

  • Mahoning County Children Services led a roundtable today with juvenile court and health officials to address rising behavioral health needs in children. Stakeholders discussed costly residential care and explored ways to bring children back into community care.  The Vindicator

  • Youngstown State beat Cleveland State 60-55 on Monday at Corteva Coliseum in Indianapolis after a late three gave the Penguins the win to reach their first Horizon League championship game. They will face Green Bay today at noon with an NCAA tournament bid on the line.  Tribune Chronicle
