COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Hartford Community Park Committee hosts its annual raffle basket extravaganza Saturday at Hartford Hills Winery with music by Captain Colada and a 50-50 raffle drawing at 8 p.m. Visit the Hartford Park Committee social media page for details.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Mr. Darby's Vintage & Antiques held a Spring Charity Event at its Boardman location on Thursday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. to support Levi, a local student with leukemia; the fundraiser featured raffles, vendor sales, and local food to help cover his treatment costs.  WFMJ
  • On Thursday afternoon, students and staff at Lowellville Local School District held a Shave-A-Thon to support the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and raised $17,026—well above their $2,000 goal. The event, coordinated with Shave Youngstown by Ashlin’s Alliance, united the community.  The Vindicator

CRIME NEWS

  • Columbiana County Humane Society rescued 19 animals (including dogs, cats, goats, a snake, chickens, and a rooster) from a Lisbon farm on Mar. 12, and Chief Humane Officer Fabian Pike said the investigation continues with anticipated charges.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Elm Road Triple Drive-In Theatre in Warren will open its 2026 season on Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4 with a screening of 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' plus other films to be announced. Admission is $12 for adults and $7 for children.  WFMJ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported 5,611 new unemployment claims last week (an increase of 713) and 60,147 continuing claims (a decline of 1,979) from March 1 to March 7.  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Christina Saenger, Ph.D., who served as interim dean since July 2025, will officially become dean of YSU's Williamson College of Business Administration on April 1. She aims to enhance curriculum modernization, expand online programs, and strengthen community partnerships.  WFMJ
  • Mathews Local Schools board will vote on March 18 on cutting soccer, esports and indoor track due to funding shortfalls; community families plan to support the soccer program amid declining high school participation + district officials are exploring other budget cuts.  WFMJ
  • The TCTC Board approved a $1.9M roof replacement project to repair the adult education and part of the high school roof (about 50,000 sqft) this summer, with further repairs scheduled for 2027.  Tribune Chronicle
  • The Poland Board of Education announced it will reissue the superintendent posting as an internal opportunity after meeting with three finalists (Andrew Tommelleo, Andreas Johansson, and Anna Minor) on Monday, Mar. 9. The board said it will consider community feedback as it follows a careful process.  The Vindicator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Trumbull County saved $25,902 in interest for water and sewer projects by using the state treasurer’s Ohio Market Access Program. This marked its third use of OMAP — totaling $102,818 in savings.  The Vindicator

HEALTH NEWS

  • Trumbull County officials reported overdose deaths have declined from 61 in 2024 to 54 in 2025, a drop credited to expanded prevention efforts and increased treatment access (including wider distribution of Narcan). They say community partnerships and monthly coalition meetings will keep efforts strong as the opioid challenge persists.  WFMJ
