  • Phantom Fireworks is once again treating first responders in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties to free corned beef sandwiches on St. Patrick’s Day — a five-year tradition — with pick up available at Jeff Chrystal’s Catering on Belmont Avenue Monday, March 17th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  WYTV
  • Power outages impacted hundreds in neighborhoods near South Avenue and Indianola Road on Friday, with around 20 homes affected initially and more areas soon losing power—Ohio Edison crews responded and estimated restoration to occur between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.  WFMJ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A car nearly hit a house on Friday before 3 p.m. at Oakwood and N. Hazelwood avenues when two cars crashed—three people had minor injuries and went to a hospital as police investigate a possible red light violation.  WYTV

CRIME NEWS

  • A Newton Falls man, David Smith, was convicted on charges of attempted aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, felonious assault and aggravated burglary for a hammer attack on a woman on October 16, 2015—he was retried after a technicality led to his release on March 13.  WFMJ
  • Thirty-nine-year-old Shane McDevitt pleaded guilty to murdering his 65-year-old mother Cecilia Liposky (found dead on Mercer Road in Neshannock Township) and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.  WFMJ
  • A magistrate granted Youngstown’s request to close Vibez Event Center on the South Side after three homicides and multiple calls for loud music, fights, and drag racing occurred— a March 28 hearing will decide on a permanent closure.  WYTV
  • A Sharpsville man faces charges after he stole his mother's SUV and crashed it on Interstate 80 in Hubbard early Friday — Hermitage police said his 42-year-old son had been stabbed before he was driven off and that another man found nearby was taken to a Youngstown hospital.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kevin O’Connell has been named the new Maplewood schools superintendent with a three-year contract worth $117,500 that starts Aug. 1 and ends July 31, 2028. He is leaving as McDonald schools superintendent and will submit his resignation next week—replacing retiring Perry Nicholas.  The Vindicator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Trumbull County commissioners approved a $2 million transfer from the $14 million rainy day fund Friday to help pay for department budgets and avoid layoffs. They left over $11.5 million in reserve (a level that meets national standards) and plan to review the funding on Monday with further talks scheduled Tuesday.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Michael Newman, a talented trumpeter who works at Giant Eagle in Salem, was sworn in earlier this year as a board member for the Columbiana County Board of Developmental Disabilities—he now works to help others with disabilities.  WYTV
