COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Hubbard Historical Society seeks community help to catalog donated items and recruit new members as it prepares a display of local artifacts at the McBride House — which holds over 3,000 items like uniforms and photos. The next meeting is set for May 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hubbard Senior Center — membership dues are $10 now and will rise to $20 in 2026.  The Vindicator

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Youngstown Fire crews responded around 5 p.m. Sunday to a car on fire on Manhattan Avenue that spread flames to a neighbor's home, though no one was injured (officials are ruling it as an accident) and are still investigating (further details are pending).  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 47th annual Mahoning Valley St. Patrick's Day parade took place Sunday in Boardman despite heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 50 mph. Families, including eleven-year-old Liam Twohig from Lordstown, enjoyed treats like a potato on a stick and candy tossed along Market Street.  The Vindicator
  • Artist Alex Katz, 97, donated his oil painting 'Amanda and Kyle' to the Butler Institute of American Art after his fall show — the work is valued over $80,000 and now hangs in the Waldman Gallery.  The Vindicator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At their meeting last week, Canfield Township trustees approved a one-year electric aggregation plan that will take effect on June 1 at 8.49 cents per kWh – residents now pay 4.92 cents per kWh and the rate is expected to double this summer as officials hope prices drop afterward. Trustees also approved contracts for Cross Brothers Landscaping to fertilize the Community Park and Easton Lawn Service to mow it for 2025, with each service's pricing confirmed at the meeting.  The Vindicator
  • Youngstown City Council will vote Wednesday on contracts for projects including $2.7 million for downtown street improvements, $1.6 million to rehabilitate the South Avenue Bridge, $290,000 to refurbish City Hall, and $300,000 for school area upgrades using state funds. The bridge work—set to start in spring 2026 and last about four months—is funded by local, state, and federal dollars.  The Vindicator

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Penguin City Brewing on Saturday, the Shave Youngstown event raised $64K—exceeding its $50K goal—to support childhood cancer research and help local families. Jason Cottrill said the funds will aid the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and advance support for affected families.  Tribune Chronicle
  • On Sunday, community leaders, staff and local residents gathered at Sharon Regional Medical Center’s open house to celebrate its upcoming reopening. Hospital leaders said staff are finalizing safety checks and the hospital will reopen Tuesday (March 18) with key services while additional ones come later.  WFMJ
