CRIME NEWS

  • A man identified as Kevin Townsend Jr. was arrested in Boardman after he gave police a false name during a Sunday traffic stop that began when officers noticed a concealed license plate cover & expired registration, and he now faces felony charges for identity fraud and falsification with outstanding warrants from Summit, Portage and Mercer counties discovered at Mahoning County Jail.  WYTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • A restored sculpture was installed Tuesday at the Butler Institute of American Art on Wick Avenue between the Butler and Maag Library. The piece (Primary Compass) was refurbished by Brilex after being removed from its former location, and a dedication is planned for June 7.  WYTV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Raymond John Wean Foundation awarded $270k in grants to Bridgeway Capital and Valley Economic Development Partners to boost economic growth in the Mahoning Valley. Bridgeway received a one-year grant for its Youngstown and Warren operations — Valley Economic Development Partners received a two-year grant to fund its Growbiz revolving loan fund.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday night at Eastwood Event Centre in Niles, 33 teachers were honored at the inaugural Mahoning Valley Educators of the Year event amid school budget cuts and staff shortages. The event—created by art instructor Josh MacMillan to support educators—recognized one teacher from each district in Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana counties, and it also awarded five special honors—further marking teacher dedication.  WFMJ
  • At the inaugural Mahoning Valley Educators of the Year dinner in Niles, 33 teachers were honored and West Branch Local Schools teacher Abbie Millard was named Educator of the Year. Special awards were given to Ethan Gross from Newton Falls as Young, Leann Laure from Sebring as Golden, Kelli Komlanc from Hubbard as Early, and Staci Raab from Ursuline as Secondary—300 guests attended the event.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Abbie Millard, a West Branch Local Schools fifth-grade teacher, was named the first Mahoning Valley Educator of the Year at Tuesday's event at Eastwood Event Centre in Niles that honored 33 teachers from Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The event also selected special awards for five teachers and was attended by about 300 guests (including community leaders and educators).  The Vindicator

  • Tornado sirens will sound today at 9:50 a.m. as local communities and schools take part in a statewide drill that tests emergency and sheltering plans — state agencies urge residents to review their tornado safety plans.  The Vindicator

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Heart Association met with over two dozen advocates at the statehouse on March 18 to ask lawmakers to pass a bill to raise tobacco taxes—funding a prevention program—and another to bring CPR training to schools. The group said the proposals could cut deaths from cardiac arrest and lower youth smoking rates.  WFMJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Youngstown State baseball won a 15-5 game against Mercyhurst on Tuesday at Eastwood Field and improved to 3-16 with two straight wins. Canfield native Brandon Mikos earned the win in four innings — YSU freshman Caleb Hadley hit his second home run while local player Brady Shannon contributed a run batted in, and the team will host Purdue Fort Wayne for a three-game series on March 21.  WYTV
