COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Valley Partners hosted the third Women’s LeadHERship Summit on Thursday at the Eastwood Event Center in Niles, drawing about 700 attendees to celebrate local female leaders. The event featured speakers + networking opportunities and a Mentor Marketplace showcasing women-owned businesses.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Mike Iberis, who led Second Harvest Food Bank for 25 years, announced his retirement on Thursday before joining the board, while longtime associate Renee Fuller takes over to continue the food bank’s mission of delivering meals to thousands (including Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull counties).  Tribune Chronicle
  • Austintown Intermediate School hosted its annual Hoops for Hope game at Fitch High School gym earlier this week to raise funds for teacher Chelsea Kachelries who is fighting cancer. Staff and fifth-grade teams played in a friendly contest with raffles, food stands and a live band to support her family.  The Vindicator
  • The League of Women Voters inducted nine local women into its hall of fame on Thursday evening, honoring their community impact. The nonprofit also hosted its biggest fundraiser to support its annual voter guide (nonpartisan).  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • After founder John Vlahos died in Dec. 2025, his family is set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vlahos Original Greek Gyros this summer at local fairs in Warren (their hometown) with special events to honor his legacy.  Tribune Chronicle
  • BRITE Energy Innovators in Warren named Jade Davis its CEO and president in November. He said he plans to streamline startup services & provide direct investments in companies to boost growth and create local jobs.  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Bloomfield student earned 2nd place for her acrylic painting 'Lights Out' at the county art show held on Wednesday at the Medici Museum in Howland (the first entry by Bloomfield students in several years).  WFMJ
  • The Youngstown State University Board of Trustees adopted a resolution to propose up to a 3% tuition increase for students beginning in fiscal year 2027 at a quarterly meeting in Tod Hall. YSU President Bill Johnson also announced construction updates and an April 25 open house at the Steubenville campus.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents toured the new Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission at 1915 Belmont Ave during a Thursday third ward meeting, noting the expanded services for veterans. The facility — located near the Veterans Affairs clinic — is set to officially open Saturday and welcome the public in April.  WFMJ
  • Officials are set to repair key roads and intersections in the Golden Triangle when a new round of bidding is approved by the U.S. Economic Development Administration. Construction will start this spring and finish by mid 2027.  Tribune Chronicle

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A study found that housing shortages—especially of two-bedroom units—are causing fewer moves within Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Eastgate Regional Council of Governments will share a simplified report with local officials to guide gradual fixes to the housing stock.  Tribune Chronicle
