COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jersey Mike’s will donate 100% of all sales on March 26 at its Salem and Cortland stores to The Brightside Project, at its Boardman store to Project MKC, and at its Hermitage store to the Children's Center for Mercer County. The donation is part of the Month of Giving campaign that began in 2011—this year the company hopes to beat last year’s record of $25 million.  WFMJ
  • At the #1 Cochran Buick GMC store in Boardman, the auto group presented a $5,000 check to Potential Development to support its fundraising events, school programs and autism initiatives—marking its second year in a community partnership that boosts student resources.  WFMJ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Thursday, a Jeep crashed through a guardrail on Meridian Road near Salt Springs Road in Austintown, and rescue squads from Austintown and Youngstown helped at least one person from the overturned vehicle—police are investigating the incident.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Jaggerz will perform at Potter Playhouse, 100 Maine Boulevard, East Liverpool at 7 p.m. April 5 — the show will introduce new guitarist Buddy Schneider from Rumors, and $20 tickets will benefit school music programs. The event marks the first concert in the renovated auditorium and is presented by East Liverpool High School Thespian Troupe #319.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Tito Brown delivered his State of the City address to community leaders, focusing on improved housing, reduced crime, and plans to redevelop the recently purchased Chill Can land—valued at $1,379,580—for future economic growth. He said he will assess the property and meet with business owners as he works to strengthen downtown and prepares for his run for a third term.  WFMJ
  • At Stambaugh Auditorium yesterday, Mayor Tito Brown said that ARP funds administered by Seven-Seventeen Credit Union will be used to build affordable housing (including condos, townhouses and one-floor homes) and to repair roofs on seniors' houses. He said the plan comes as the community works to recover from hardships like the Realty Building explosion.  WYTV
  • Trumbull County Commissioners are planning a long-term project at Mosquito Lake and intend to secure a $500,000 grant to hire an architectural firm to study if sewer lines can be extended into the Mosquito Lake, Cortland + Mecca area for building cabins that may bring visitors and boost the local economy. Commissioner Rick Hernandez said the study is the first step and awaits a decision from Congressman Joyce.  WFMJ
  • Mayor Jamael Tito Brown said Thursday that Youngstown is overcoming challenges like COVID-19, a delayed street improvement project, and the Realty Tower explosion that killed one and displaced hundreds. He outlined plans to boost local growth with a $62.2 million Innovation Hub that received $27.2 million in state funding and over $27 million allocated for affordable housing programs—efforts designed to create new jobs and quality homes.  The Vindicator
  • Mahoning County Commissioners considered bids on Thursday for a $4 million project to rehabilitate Youngstown’s Market Street Bridge. The work included repairs to the bridge piers along with new lighting and fencing, with bids of $350,000 from Mannik Smith Group and $3,723,105 from BG Trucking and Construction—95% of BG's bid was set to be state-funded following a $1,878,000 grant awarded last year.  WFMJ
