COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Youngstown CityScape will host its annual Streetscape Planting Day on May 31 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in downtown Youngstown—if the weather is inclement, the event will move to the following day from 9 a.m. to noon and volunteers must register. WFMJ
- ➤ Austintown Senior Center became the 8th senior center in Ohio to earn the Senior Center of Excellence Accreditation from the Ohio Association of Senior Centers on March 20th. The center will expand its programs—such as fitness classes, educational workshops and social events—to support older adults in the community. WFMJ
- ➤ MetroParks will host the Youngstown Road Runners Club Mill Creek Distance Classic Half Marathon and 5 Mile Run on Sunday, March 23. Several roads and facilities will close to vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic between 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. including the East Park Hike-Bike Trail and Memorial Hill Drive while access is limited at the Ford Nature Center, Lily Pond and Birch Hill Cabin. - ➤ Campbell police officer Jim Conroy exposed that dog trainer and nonprofit operator Steffen Baldwin defrauded donors and killed 36 dogs — including pit bull Remi — and misused funds, and Baldwin was sentenced on March 11 to 15.5 years for multiple felony counts. The Vindicator
- ➤ Howland Police are searching for a black 2013-15 Chevy Malibu (with damage to the passenger side headlight and hood) involved in a hit-skip crash on March 17 on the 4000 Block of Valacamp Avenue, where a man was hospitalized with serious injuries and a woman with minor injuries after the car struck a motorized bicycle. - ➤ Four art museums in the Mahoning Valley were chosen for Ohio's Creativity Trail — the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, the Medici Museum of Art in Howland, the Burchfield Homestead Museum in Salem and the Museum of Ceramics in East Liverpool highlight Ohio's visual arts. This new trail groups sites by themes to celebrate art from different communities. WFMJ

- ➤ On Wednesday the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments over the arrest of former Trumbull County Commissioner Niki Frenchko during a July 7th board meeting when she disrupted proceedings by criticizing inmate care. Her lawyers argued that the arrest violated her First Amendment rights—while supporters said her conduct justified the arrest. Tribune Chronicle
- ➤ Drivers in Hubbard now have a new stop sign at the intersection of Waugh Drive and Jerry Drive installed after complaints that a long stretch without a stop sign did not allow drivers to slow down for children — local police advise extra caution in the area. WFMJ

- ➤ St. Elizabeth Cancer Center in Boardman celebrates 25 years of service since opening in January 2000 under the leadership of oncologist Dr. Patrizia Guerrieri. Last year, the facility treated around 300 new patients and performed 5,000 radiation therapy treatments—showing its growth from a small radiation unit to a full medical campus—while serving the Valley. - ➤ Boardman High School senior Kayden Beish was diagnosed with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis — a rare disease with nearly 100% risk for colon cancer if untreated — and her school and community are rallying to support her care.
