COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday afternoon, a crowd gathered at Central Square to honor 105 locals lost during the Vietnam War at the annual Laying of the Roses ceremony. Veterans, families, and community members placed roses as names were read — a tribute on National Vietnam War Veterans Day.  The Vindicator
  • Community leaders gathered Sunday at Glenwood Grounds Cafe on the South Side to honor Jo Ann Bland, a civil rights icon whose work in voting rights and social justice inspired many (including City Council president Anita Davis). Emotions ran high as friends and local officials recalled her impactful legacy.  The Vindicator
  • Volunteers, including Campbell Elementary sixth grader Emily Forni, helped clean Jackson Park near Jackson Street (and Murray Avenue) Saturday morning and removed years of trash and unusual finds. Councilwoman Mary Janek and Councilman Timothy O’Bryan plan to host park events in May to boost community use.  The Vindicator
  • This weekend, Friends of Fido hosts a spring vendor show Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Canfield while Taste of Liberty benefits local schools Saturday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Liberty High School; additional art shows, health fairs, workshops and support groups extend family opportunities.  The Vindicator

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mahoning Valley is hosting Women’s History Month events throughout March, including a dress-up at Struthers Library through March 31 and a noon reenactment at the Youngstown Historical Center on Wednesday — with additional resource and open mic events on Friday at YSU and DOPE Cider House.  The Vindicator
  • Anne McEvoy of Women in History portrayed Mother Mary Harris Jones at Saturday’s 38th Trumbull County Women’s History Celebration at DiVieste’s Banquet Centre in Warren. The event honored local women’s achievements and awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Mia McEachern of Youngstown, a special education major at YSU.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Six local art students from Canfield and LaBrae have been chosen for the 2026 Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition. Their work will be displayed at the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower in downtown Columbus (April 12 to May 15).  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Harriet Taylor Upton shared her experience serving five three-year terms on the school board in Warren as local women rallied to elect her and Carrie Harrington (after school board suffrage was granted in 1893), recounting a campaign that is part of a weekly series by the Trumbull County Historical Society.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Roosevelt Elementary in McDonald hosts an art show Friday 5-8 p.m. and Saturday noon-3 p.m., while Mineral Ridge High holds an art display and drama performance 'Hairspray' at 7 p.m. both days (tickets are $6 for students, $10 for adults).  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hubbard Township leaders resumed talks today to remove the privately owned Valley Mould Dam and clear sediment behind the township building to improve water quality. Eastgate Regional Council of Governments — which is set to lead a hydraulic study and funding discussions — plans further steps as the city decides its role.  The Vindicator
  • McDonald village is set to receive over $1.4M in state funds for park, sidewalk, and street projects. Grants cover paving on Olive and West Second streets and sidewalks on West Second Street, with a check presentation at Woodland Park on April 10 and work starting in 2027 and 2028.  The Vindicator

SPORTS NEWS

  • Niles high school football coach Tom Sporich resigned Friday after making an inappropriate remark (he later apologized), and the board will meet Tuesday at the district building to decide on a replacement.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Youngstown State softball beat Detroit Mercy in a doubleheader Saturday, winning Game 1 8-0 and Game 2 10-4 to capture a series victory in Horizon League play. Freshman Kennedy Kimball pitched 11.1 innings across both games (earning two wins and a shutout) as the Penguins improved to 13-11.  Tribune Chronicle
