COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Jersey Mike’s outlets in the Valley will donate 100% of sales to help local Team Ohio athletes attend the Special Olympics USA Games in the Twin Cities from June 20 to 26 (purchases can be made in-store, online, or via their app to help beat last year’s record).  WFMJ
  • A local nonprofit is racing to raise $90K before its property is sold (according to Derek Steyer) as it works to preserve a community resource.  WFMJ
  • The Youngstown Skatepark Association received a $7,500 grant from the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley to support its general operations and the upcoming 2026 pop-up skatepark series that will transform local spaces into free temporary skateparks. The funds came from the Arnett Family Fund (and the Rick Shale Fund).  WFMJ
  • Bike Belmont returns for its fourth year on Sunday, May 17 at 12:00 p.m. at Wick Park and will offer three route options for riders of all ages while promoting healthy lifestyles and community connections along Belmont Avenue (including a post-ride celebration with food trucks and family activities).  WFMJ
  • Sharon Kelly found her missing dog Saleo near Fellows Riverside Gardens this weekend after he had been gone since summer 2017 and is now on antibiotics for an eye and nasal infection.  WFMJ

  • Culver’s plans to open its first Mahoning Valley location at the former Hot Dog Shoppe on Route 224 in Boardman. The company has met with the architectural committee and will file its application soon.  WFMJ
  • Jeffrey Chrystal Catering previewed its Easter dinner menu on Tuesday, Mar. 24. Owner (chef) Jeffrey Chrystal outlined festive dishes for families planning their holiday meal.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Mahoning Valley is hosting events celebrating Women’s History Month in March. Families can visit Struthers Library through March 31 for a dress-up event, enjoy a historical talk today at Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor at noon, and attend a clothing swap with an open mic on Friday at local venues.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Labra Brothers will headline the 330 Day Concert at Robins Theatre, 160 E. Market St., Warren, on Monday at 7 p.m., previewing singles from their upcoming album. The event will include local bands and feature their new Latin funk live set & expanded horn section.  Tribune Chronicle

  • Judge Renee M. DiSalvo is hosting 'Steering Clear,' a suspended license intervention workshop on Saturday, March 28 at 9 a.m. at the McGuffey Centre (1649 Jacobs Rd) to help participants reinstate their driving privileges by connecting them with a license specialist and volunteer attorney, plus social services support.  WFMJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Presale tickets for the Phantoms' postseason games are on sale today at 10 a.m. for $10 adults and $6 children with password SPARKY online. Sale ends 10 p.m. Mar. 31, and games are set for Apr. 17 at 7:05 p.m. and Apr. 18 at 6:05 p.m. at the Covelli Centre.  WFMJ
  • The Youngstown State women’s basketball team beat Maryland Eastern Shore 61-42 on Tuesday night at Zidian Family Arena with a strong third quarter that led to their first postseason win since 2016. The Penguins will host Marshall in the WNIT Super 16 on Friday at 6:30 p.m.  The Vindicator
  • Six Youngstown athletes aged eight to 15 have been scaling 15-foot walls and solving puzzles without ropes in recent climbing competitions — a practice that builds skills for tough challenges. Two team members, Rihanna Guzzetti and Emerald Cronin, will compete at the regional championships in Pittsburgh on Saturday, Mar. 28.  WFMJ
