COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Mar. 25, CCBDD hosted its annual Basketball Classic at Nace Gymnasium in Lisbon—CCBDD staff played two games against the Comets Special Olympics teams while high scorer Michael Newman led the contest and YSU mascot Pete the Penguin made a guest appearance.  WFMJ
  • On Thursday, March 26, Ohio Widows Sons Knights of the East presented a $2,500 check to Every Dog Matters Rescue Group; the donation will cover vet costs as the shelter — which cared for 40 dogs this year — prepares its fourth Golf Outing at 6329 Market Street in Boardman.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Deer Creek Golf Course – located at 7691 East Liberty Street in Hubbard – closed on March 26 due to economic reasons. The closure was announced on its website and Facebook page with no further comment.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Trumbull County Historical Society announced on Wednesday it had acquired an extensive archaeological collection donated by the late Thomas R. Pigott to preserve Mahoning Valley prehistory, and will soon begin cataloging the archives at the John Stark Edwards House with local volunteer support.  The Vindicator

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local lawmakers in Lordstown imposed a six month hold on data center projects in January while Hubbard Township set a year long hold, leaving the multi billion dollar proposal on pause. Officials say the project may bring temporary construction jobs but could also increase residents’ utility bills if it eventually moves forward.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Cortland Library Branch at 578 Lakeview Drive will host Science Saturday for kids aged 5-11 on Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. Children can join free hands-on experiments & activities to explore science concepts.  Tribune Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local governments in the tri-county area received $111,611 from the EPA for water system projects that include well closures, emergency generator grants, and source water protections in villages, cities and mobile home parks in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties. The awards were announced Thursday to improve drinking water safety.  WFMJ
  • More than 2,000 customers lost power last night in Mahoning and Shenango Valley regions, with Cambell reporting 835 outages and Trumbull 211; restoration was expected by midnight today in Mahoning County + by around 10:30–11:30 p.m. in Trumbull.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Trumbull County Commissioners approved $130K for MetroParks’ 2026 budget at a Howland meeting on Thursday. MetroParks executive director Zachary Svette said the funds will cover emergency repairs, staffing, and a proposal for an accessibility ramp while board members plan to seek additional grants.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Struthers and Girard are considering free urgent care visits for residents and city workers, with QUICKmed set to manage facilities that the cities would own; Mayor Zuppo said funding discussions continue and the pilot could boost local business appeal.  WFMJ
  • The Ohio House approved a bill by Rep. Tex Fischer that lets businesses test products without full licenses for up to seven years, starting with 24 months plus extension options. The Senate is set to review changes to make the program more universal this summer.  Tribune Chronicle

  • YSU extended women's basketball coach Melissa Jackson (through the 2030-31 season) on Thursday after a season that saw the Penguins reach a 25-9 record. The team will face the Thundering Herd in the Super 16 of the WNIT tonight.  Tribune Chronicle
