COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A family member of a Howland resident affected by Saturday's house fire started a donation page to cover repair costs and housing needs (the house suffered external wall and smoke damage) as her mother recovers from surgery on fixed income. Firefighters arrived at 7:45 p.m. and reported no injuries.  WFMJ
  • Trumbull County Children Services will host its Pinwheels for Prevention ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Harding High School’s recreation center to start Child Abuse Prevention Month; over the weekend, the Touch of Class Horse Club placed 1,373 pinwheels, and TCCS executive Marilyn Pape with Judge Patricia Knepp will speak.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Mahoning County Children Services and partners will host the 21st Pinwheels for Prevention at Avion on the Water Banquet Center at 9 a.m. Thursday during National Child Abuse Prevention Month. A pinwheel garden will be on Boardman Township Park’s front lawn from Tuesday until April 30 to honor child protection.  The Vindicator
  • The Grand Resort will host its spring vendor market featuring food, drinks and DJ entertainment. Community members can enjoy shopping local vendors and live music at the resort.  WFMJ
  • Trumbull County Jr. Fair Board hosted an annual pancake breakfast, Easter egg hunt and raffle basket fundraiser on Mar. 29 to support local 4H programs while offering families a fun day to help sustain year-long activities.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • In this week’s Heritage series by the Trumbull County Historical Society, records note that the McKinley brothers met untimely deaths as James died on a train near New Castle, David suffered a stroke in San Francisco, and Abner succumbed to Bright’s disease (each event highlighting our area's rich past).  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will host Kids Club: Floating and Sinking for children aged 5 to 11 at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the McKinley Birthplace Memorial Home (registration is required by calling 330-652-1704 ext. 4).  Tribune Chronicle
  • Today, the school district hosts the OSBA spring conference at Choffin Career and Technical Center, inviting over 150 regional education leaders and adjusting schedules to accommodate evening activities (which replaced a planned day off). The board also approved a Kent State agreement for Choffin’s surgical technology certificate program starting June 1.  The Vindicator
  • On Saturday, 128 local middle and high school students competed in Region 4 Ohio History Day at Beeghly Center and received awards for projects on Ohio history; top winners advanced to state contests at Capital University + national contests at the University of Maryland.  Tribune Chronicle

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Ohio State University Master Gardener Volunteers will host the annual Spring Garden Workshop on April 25 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Extension Office on South Broad Street in Canfield — the event will include keyed sessions, a hot lunch, and a goody bag for participants.  Tribune Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Youngstown State softball team swept both games in a doubleheader against Northern Kentucky on Saturday, winning 9-5 and 7-5 to boost their record to 17-12 overall and 5-1 in conference play. The Penguins will play midweek doubleheaders at Mercyhurst on Tuesday and at Bowling Green Wednesday at 3 p.m.  Tribune Chronicle
