COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Franky's Pizza & Delicatessen in Warren won first prize for best Sicilian-style pizza at an international challenge in Las Vegas from March 24 through 26; the award-winning pie is available on the menu for the first time this week.  WFMJ
  • The 17th Annual Panerathon will fill downtown Youngstown on Sunday, Aug. 23 with a 10K and a 2-mile run/walk to raise funds for breast cancer care. Registration opens at 10 a.m. on Friday, Apr. 3 and race packets are available on Thursday, Aug. 20 at the Covelli Centre.  WFMJ
  • Youngstown CityScape honored founding member Scott Schulick with the Sweet Grass Roots Award at its 16th Annual Grass Roots Gala on Monday at Stambaugh Auditorium. More than 250 guests enjoyed a Taste of Youngstown event with live music & downtown support as the non-profit celebrated nearly 30 years of community revitalization.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Legacy Tire & Auto Repair, formerly West Side Tire, will celebrate its first anniversary under new ownership by hosting an open house on April 1 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its Mahoning Avenue location, part of a Customer Appreciation Week running March 30 to April 3.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at MCCTC built an outdoor concert stage at Quaker Steak and Lube in Austintown Monday afternoon (they teamed up with local partners and were honored with a lunch) and the stage will host community events including Bike Night starting April 30.  WFMJ
  • South Side Academy in Youngstown is closed for nearly two weeks due to unforeseen circumstances. School officials expect students to return on April 13 after Easter break.  WFMJ
  • Howland Rotary Club met Monday at Shepherd of the Valley as Howland High juniors Joshua Chuba and Destiny Nguyen shared leadership lessons from the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards conference in Canfield in late January — the program spurred Chuba to launch a nonprofit.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Youngstown City School District hosted its spring conference at Choffin Career and Technical Center during the Ohio School Boards Association event. Leaders said the showcase impressed regional districts from Niles, Campbell, and Girard while honoring local educators for their support of public education.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County officials plan to repair potholes on local roads as warmer weather sets in later this week, with work scheduled to begin soon to improve driving safety.  WFMJ
  • Daycare centers in Youngstown have not received state funding for weeks, straining budgets and raising concerns among caregivers. Local officials have yet to announce a plan to restore the funding.  WFMJ
  • A stretch of Edwards Street between Mahoning Avenue and High Street was closed on Monday, March 30 for emergency sanitary sewer repairs, and the work is expected to last for two days (drivers may use I-680 from Glenwood Avenue to High Street).  WFMJ
  • Ohio Department of Natural Resources crews have drained Guilford Lake near Lisbon for a $16 million dam repair project that paused Mark’s Landing’s boat rentals + locals are now searching the exposed mud for hidden treasures. The lake is expected to refill by spring.  WFMJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Heritage Manor Skilled Nursing received a deficiency-free rating from the Ohio Department of Health today, confirming it met all care, safety, and staffing standards. Interim executive director Shane Baldwin said it is the facility's second clean health survey in three reviews (equivalent to a five-star rating).  WFMJ
