BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Friday, Insight issued a WARN notice furloughing all 143 employees due to unforeseen business circumstances—company officials said the work suspension may last less than six months and future funding is not yet secured. All services at Trumbull and Hillside hospitals were paused as of last Thursday and a new president, Dr. Jawad Shah, was named to lead the transition.  WYTV

CRIME NEWS

  • A 25-year-old Youngstown man, Jaquon Mixon, pleaded guilty in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to charges including improper discharge of a firearm at or into a habitation (a second-degree felony), felonious assault (a second-degree felony), being a felon in possession of a firearm (a second-degree felony), possession of fentanyl (a fourth-degree felony), and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle (a fourth-degree felony) while prosecutors recommended a prison sentence of at least 10 years.  WYTV
  • On March 6, officers responded to South State Road after a report of an attack at Noah Howley's house—where a Girard man allegedly held a large hunting knife to a woman's throat and dragged her down a flight of stairs—and he pleaded not guilty on Monday with bond set at $50,000 and a pretrial scheduled for April 3.  WYTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will offer a new five month veterinary assistant program that teaches animal care, lab procedures, and pharmacology — the course includes 150 hours of classroom study and a 100 hour externship at veterinary hospitals. Enrollment is open for the spring and summer session with an open house on April 8 at 6 p.m. and classes starting April 14.  WYTV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District received $10,000 from the Kennedy Family Fund and Rick Shale Fund for its Backyard Conservation Program — a program that helps properties adopt practices to protect soil, water and wildlife. The program will reimburse up to $500 for eligible projects like rain gardens and permeable pavement, and applications will be accepted online starting May 1 until May 31.  WYTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early in-person voting for the May primary on Tuesday, May 6 begins next week in our area. Voters must register by April 7 at 9 p.m. and show a photo ID (or cast a provisional ballot) to vote early.  WKBN
  • Col. Christopher E. Sedlacek will take command of the 910th Airlift Wing at YARS during an upcoming ceremony led by Maj. Gen. Melissa A. Coburn—he replaces Col. Michael Maloney, who left in early March. The base will also receive new C-130J-30 aircraft in stages until mid-2026 while projects continue to update the gate, taxiway and fire station funding.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Monday evening, Howland township officials met with the county sanitary department to discuss a proposed water rate increase that has stirred resident concerns—Bazetta Trustee Michael Hovis noted many calls about the changes while comptroller Bob Maiorano presented rising costs and fresh losses since the last rate hike in 2011. Gary Newbrough added that bulk water cost increases from cities like Niles are driving the need for these adjustments.  The Vindicator
  • Early in-person voting for the May Primary Election on Tuesday, May 6 will begin next week with hours that vary by county; voters must show a photo ID or cast a provisional ballot.
