COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At 7:30 a.m. on April 10, the Youngstown / Warren Regional Chamber will honor four individuals for their contributions to the Mahoning Valley at its annual meeting at Waypoint 4180 in Canfield — Wally King and Gary Wagner will receive the Valley Champion Award, Dan Rivers will earn the Spirit of the Valley Award, and Shelley Murray will get the Spirit of the Chamber Award. Wagner will also serve as the keynote speaker and join Mike McGiffin in a discussion on regional workforce and economic development.  Tribune Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Milton Township police arrested a Lake Milton man after he allegedly hit a woman and put her in a chokehold on March 11 on Ellsworth Road—he now faces charges of kidnapping, strangulation and assault and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on April 9 after failing to post a $50,000 bond.  WKBN
  • The Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County is investigating cat poisonings at Blue Water Manor (Newton Township) after agents were called last Wednesday and is offering a $10,000 reward for tips linking to bowls of tuna mixed with antifreeze and bleach while agents are checking a similar case in (Niles).  WKBN

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Trumbull Career & Technical Center students visited Oh Wow! downtown to test the new America Makes 3D Printing Lab using 10 printers and offer feedback— the exhibit will open to the public on April 16 as one of three new spaces aimed at stirring local interest in technical careers.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jim Tressel, and Chancellor Mike Duffey today announced $8 million in funding for Ohio's RAPIDS grants program to help public schools buy new equipment for workforce training — the effort targets job skill improvements. Four Valley institutes received a total of $331,460.06 with Youngstown State University getting $103,980, Choffin Career and Technical Center $88,462.03, Columbiana County JVSD $68,339, and Mahoning County Career and Technical Center $70,679.03.  WFMJ
  • Youngstown State University is examining Senate Bill 1, which was signed into law and will reshape higher education across the state. President Bill Johnson said international students will keep their status while new rules limit faculty rights — YSU OEA President Mark Vopat warned that these changes may drive faculty to move to states with stronger protections.  WYTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mahoning County Board of Elections reported building problems that led to two closures—including one from a power outage—and raised voter access concerns at the facility on Oak Hill Avenue. The board will meet with Mahoning County commissioners to update its contingency plan and discuss long-term solutions to improve public transportation access along bus routes.  WFMJ
  • Ohio’s Division of Cannabis Control studied states like California and Colorado to set safeguards for its recreational marijuana market and will review license numbers in upcoming biennial reviews—lawmakers are also planning higher tax rates and stricter rules that may affect dispensaries while Ohio has sold over $2.5 billion in cannabis to date.  WKBN

  • Mercy Health and Cigna extended their contract for 24 hours—ensuring all Mercy Health providers remained in-network for Cigna patients until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, April 1—and Mercy Health said it was working to secure a long-term agreement to avoid care disruption.  WKBN

  • Made Men Promotions will hold Live MMA 8 at Penguin City Brewing Company on Saturday, April 19 at 7 p.m.—doors open at 6 p.m. Local fighter Keegan The Kreature will face Elijah Davis for the vacant Bantamweight Championship.  WKBN
