COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Multiple bookstores in the Mahoning Valley and neighboring counties are joining a Spring Book Crawl on Saturday, Apr. 11, where shoppers receive a stamp card to collect stamps at each store and win a prize for completing the crawl. Participating stores will offer unique sales, surprises + giveaways.  WFMJ
  • For 10 years, the REST program has offered free exercise classes, bingo, line dancing, and arts and crafts for residents 60 and older at the McDonald community room (across from the municipal building at 500 Ohio Avenue) and celebrated its milestone with a recent open house attended by local officials.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Mahoning County Children Services Executive Director Richard Tvaroch told advocates at the Pinwheels for Prevention breakfast in Canfield that a talk with Judge Theresa Dellick gave him the courage to join the agency. Judge Dellick urged partners to invest in child welfare to build safe, stable homes (prevention is key).  The Vindicator
  • Today, Our Gang's Lounge was named the 2026 Munch Madness champion after beating Wings Express Reloaded in the food bracket. A flood warning remains in effect until late this afternoon along the Mahoning River as water inundates property on River and Front Streets in Girard — officials urge caution.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Penguin City Brewing Company will debut its new live music room (located in the upstairs ballroom) on Saturday, May 9. The inaugural show features tribute bands Space Frehley and Live Wire with 90-minute sets and is sponsored by Gervelis Law Firm, with raffle proceeds benefiting local charities.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Brookfield Board of Education approved roof repairs on a 17,000 sqft community learning center, moving the project closer to an August ribbon-cutting and a 2026-27 opening. The center, located near district offices and the school campus, will host labs, classrooms and community programs partnered with local groups.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Newton Falls say residents have called about storm damage and gas company work disturbing lawns. They advise calling the administration building or 330-544-9803 for after-hours help, and a recent report noted a $1.09 million fund balance with plans for a July 4 festival attracting 20,000 people.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Trustees will vote Monday on installing the first baby box at the Austintown Fire Department in Mahoning County. If approved, the box (with heating and a silent alarm) will give mothers a safe drop-off option.  WFMJ
  • The city spent $1.2 million on a long-vacant grocery store on the South Side but renovated only one-third of the building; it will request proposals in about 30 days to find a developer and complete the project (no further ARP funds will be used).  The Vindicator
