COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Youngstown State University hosted the annual Marjorie Hartman Family Foundation Pet Clinic today to provide free pet exams, heartworm, tick and flea prevention, and 300 vaccines for local animals. The event also gave veterinary students (from YSU, MCCTC Animal Science, and Kent State Vet Tech program) hands-on practice with animal care.  WYTV
  • Today, the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley awarded $640,000 in grants to 53 nonprofit organizations in its first grant cycle of 2025; $271,000 came from its General Grant opportunity—supplemented by $140,000, $157,000, and $90,000 from its three affiliated organizations. The foundation will offer three more grant opportunities on April 15, July 15, and Oct. 15—while accepting Impact Builder Grant applications through April 28 with finalists set to present on May 15.  The Vindicator
  • The Tour of Honor has returned for its 15th season as riders take a self-guided motorcycle tour honoring military veterans and first responders, with a stop in Warren at the First Flight Lunar Module site— a tribute to local space pioneers. Registration is open and the tour runs through Oct. 31, with proceeds benefiting three charities.  Tribune Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the latest First Fridays Youngstown event, adults took over OH WOW! at the Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology during a Nerdy Night Out with A Night Rooted in Color. The event featured more than 65 interactive exhibits across three floors—officials said the shift to adult-only experiences may attract more visitors downtown and noted another fundraiser is planned for Aug. 8.  Tribune Chronicle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new report shows Ohio loses nearly $5.5 billion each year because low-cost childcare is too scarce — this loss comes from missed taxes and earnings for employers. Gov. DeWine proposed budget changes to ease the shortage, but lawmakers removed those measures.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Saturday, more than 500 children attended the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library for Family Book Day where they made crafts, pet bunnies dressed as book characters and took home free books. Award-winning magician Yasu Ishida performed a magic show and library staff said the event promoted reading and introduced a new outreach vehicle purchased through the Library Accelerate Learning Grant+ that will visit parades, events and school literacy nights across Trumbull County.  Tribune Chronicle
  • The Trumbull County Historical Society launched the new education program, Abolitionist & Me, which teaches fourth-grade students about local Underground Railroad sites through video stories. The program highlights historic homes like Brownwood, Center Brook Manor and Obermiyer-Hart House to show how community members once helped freedom seekers.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Col. Christopher E. Sedlacek assumed command of the 910th Airlift Wing at Youngstown Air Reserve Station on Sunday during a formal ceremony and said he is eager to build strong community partnerships as he leads the base’s transition to new C-130J aircraft. He brings over 3,500 flight hours—370 of which are in combat—from his previous command at Peterson Space Force Base.  WFMJ
  • On Sunday, the Youngstown Air Reserve Station installed its new wing commander, Col. Christopher E. Sedlacek (with nearly 30 years of service) who was previously a commander in Colorado. He brought his wildfire control experience (from fighting California wildfires) to the 910th Airlift Wing as it begins transitioning to new aircraft models.  WYTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A second school-age child in Lubbock who was in the hospital for measles complications died and became the third measles death in the U.S., as cases more than doubled since late January. Ohio reported one new measles case in Allen County on Thursday, and experts say the outbreaks may last up to a year in under-vaccinated communities.  WKBN
