COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Poland resident Mary Bundy celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday night at the Inn at Poland Way in Poland Township and received congratulatory letters from well-known figures (including local officials). She plans to celebrate her actual birthday with family on Saturday.  WFMJ
  • McDonald High School senior Ava Kuntz was presented with the ServeOhio Community Impact award on Wednesday at a council meeting for her volunteer work at Woodland Park United Methodist Church food pantry, where she provided essentials to those in need.  WFMJ
  • Angels for Animals will host its annual garage sale at the Canfield Fairgrounds from Friday, Apr. 17 through Sunday, Apr. 19. The sale offers an early bird session Friday at 9 a.m. (wristbands $10), Saturday with $3 admission, and a no-fee Sunday session including an all-you-can-take event.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Union leaders informed laid-off Ultium Cells employees that the return-to-work date, once set for June, is under review as LG and GM discuss switching production from EV batteries to data center batteries (near Lordstown). The company will inform workers of any changes directly.  WFMJ
  • The Youngstown Bakehouse celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6005 South Avenue in Boardman — the bakery offers vegan and gluten-free treats and held an Easter weekend preview to test its ovens.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • LOOP Youngstown Arts + Culture Center is accepting Emerging Artist Fellowship applications for early-career visual and literary artists; the program offers free studio space & monthly material stipends at 805 Mahoning Ave, running from June 1 until April 30, with applications due May 1 for artists aged 21 and older.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Youngstown State University will receive over $730,000 from the Ohio Controlling Board (announced Wednesday) for campus improvements and workforce training. About $310,000 will fund equipment for training programs while roughly $420,000 will upgrade windows and doors on campus.  WFMJ
  • Youngstown State University will host the Freshman Portfolio Review Showcase on Monday, Apr. 13 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Bliss Hall's fourth floor, where freshman art is shown. The free exhibit runs until Apr. 24; parking costs $5 (cash only) at Wick Avenue deck.  WFMJ
  • Brookfield High School earned the Momentum Award from the Ohio Department of Education for significant academic progress during the 2024-25 school year in Mahoning Valley; principal Megan Marino credited students, staff, and families for their hard work.  WFMJ
  • A retired librarian was recognized nationally for her lifelong dedication to education. The honor, awarded on Apr. 8, celebrated her service to local libraries + community learning.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mahoning County Treasurer Dan Yemma confirmed that Southern Park Mall owner Kohan Retail Investment Group paid its property taxes for all parcels, settling a $500,913 liability with penalties from earlier this year. The payment brings the mall current on its taxes.  WFMJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley honored impact leaders at its 2026 Visionary Awards on Wednesday at Stambaugh Auditorium, recognizing three healthcare figures from Mercy Health and Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation (a longtime community partner).  WFMJ
  • Talk with a Doc provided free healthcare services to Valley residents on Wednesday, Apr. 8, offering check-ups and consultations by local health professionals (organizers noted details are available upon request).  WFMJ
