- ➤ An Express convenience store and gas station opened yesterday on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown on the site of the former middle school—while the new Meijer superstore is set to open on May 8 with services such as fresh produce, pharmacy, and home goods. - ➤ A Youngstown Police officer said he heard loud gunfire early Wednesday at about 7:20 p.m. at Himrod and Lane avenues and saw a car with 12 bullet holes while a person in the backseat fired a semiautomatic rifle with a curved magazine before driving away—shell casings were later found at the scene. - ➤ Michael Alexander, a 50-year-old former city employee who pleaded guilty in February to raping a 12-year-old in 2018, was sentenced Thursday to 15 to 19 years in prison at Mahoning County Common Pleas Court—his co-defendant Ashley Cervello is expected to plead guilty later on bribery charges. - ➤ The city of Struthers was awarded $18,548 from an EPA grant to improve river health by reducing salt runoff that hurts water quality — the funds will buy new equipment including 40 steel carbon blades and 10 razor systems. WYTV

- ➤ Mahoning County Public Health will offer the Health Coaches for Hypertension Control program beginning April 23 from 12 to 1 p.m. for eight weeks to help adults aged 55 and older learn about managing high blood pressure—covering nutrition, physical activity, tobacco cessation, stress and medication management—and it will be held at 50 Westchester Drive in Youngstown.
