COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Youngstown announced road closures and parking restrictions starting Friday at 4 p.m. for the 12th Annual Federal Frenzy Music & Arts Festival, which will run Saturday from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.; restrictions will end after teardown around 2 a.m. Sunday.  WFMJ
  • Leadership Mahoning Valley is accepting applications for its Class of 2027, starting its 42nd session in September for community leaders in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Applications are due by Wednesday, July 1, with optional Zoom sessions (April 24, May 2 and June 10) to explore the nine-month program.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Drivers in Greene Township will face detours as crews begin replacing the Wakefield Creek Road bridge between State Route 46 and Dennison-Ashtabula Road on Monday, April 20; the work is set to finish on Friday, May 22. The detour directs drivers south on Dennison-Ashtabula Road, west on State Route 87, and north on State Route 46.  WFMJ
  • Local eateries gathered for Taste of Struthers, the Rotary event in its 10th year, to help fund community projects. Seventeen vendors offered food samples and raffles — including $25 gift cards and a new golf cart — as highlights of the event.  WFMJ

  • Dearing Compressor & Pump Co. in Boardman acquired J&L Supply Company in Huntington. The acquisition expands its market coverage in southern Ohio, eastern Kentucky and West Virginia while keeping current operations unchanged.  The Vindicator
  • Dearing Compressor and Pump Co. purchased J L Supply Company in Huntington, W.Va. to expand its market reach across southern Ohio, eastern Kentucky and West Virginia markets. The family-owned firm said the operation will continue with the same customer service team at the established location.  Tribune Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation holds Holocaust commemoration programs for Yom Hashoah; a community event starts today at noon in the Mahoning County Courthouse rotunda + a memorial is set for 4 p.m. Sunday at the Jewish Community Center.  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Student journalists at YSU earned national awards from the Society for Collegiate Journalists contest after winning five first-place titles in print + broadcast + digital work. Their honors highlight strong skills and set a milestone for YSU student media today.  The Vindicator
  • Four eighth-grade robotics team members from Liberty Local Schools will head to St. Louis for the VEX Robotics World Championship from April 28 to 30 after ranking first statewide and earning multiple awards. Their team, Attack of the Sentinels, qualified through strong performance in VEX IQ competitions.  Tribune Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will host a 50th anniversary open house at Eagle Creek State Nature Preserve on April 26 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can hike trails and visit six info stations while enjoying exhibits, refreshments and a commemorative poster (11027 Hopkins Road).  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in a Boardman Township neighborhood say the rundown house at 727 Truesdale Road is a safety hazard and they want trustees to condemn it. Township officials plan to reach out to owner (Mark Russell) and coordinate more action as local concerns grow.  The Vindicator
  • Mill Creek Metroparks approved funding on Monday for renovating Kreider’s entrance on Newport Drive in Boardman. The project — which includes paving and drainage improvements — will cost about $360,000 and will be finished in 2027.  WFMJ
