ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Mahoning County Career and Technical Center confirmed that 16 year old welding student Brock A. Jones of New Middletown died at the scene of a Friday night crash in Portage County when the 2024 Chevrolet Camaro he was riding in left the road on Scotts Corners Road in Palmyra Township (speed reportedly contributed to the crash) as a 17 year old driver and two other passengers were treated for minor injuries.  The Vindicator

CRIME NEWS

  • A Trumbull County judge is expected to rule soon on whether Carroll Bruton is competent to stand trial for a fatal arson in Warren Township where the bodies of 82-year-old Roscoe Toles and 51-year-old Etiane Whitaker were found. Judge Ronald Rice ordered an independent evaluation after a recent hearing and his ruling will determine the next legal steps in the case.  WFMJ
  • A Youngstown firefighter—Patrick Bundy—was suspended for six weeks unpaid from April 20 to May 31 after he allegedly committed workers’ compensation fraud by fraudulently receiving $5,880 in benefits from January 16 to February 26, with charges filed in Franklin County on February 20 and a trial scheduled for May 8, and he will return to work on June 1.  WYTV
  • Youngstown police served a search warrant on a home and shed near 2005 Pointview Ave. on the South Side, where a 3-year-old boy was fatally shot about 5 p.m. on Monday—detectives handcuffed two men as investigators gathered evidence and await the autopsy before making any conclusions.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Rotary Club of Youngstown gave five high school students a $1,000 scholarship each to help them attend Youngstown State University—some students came from Puerto Rico and others showed strong school performance. The club has given these awards every year since 1989.  The Vindicator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Youngstown police chief Carl Davis said he has limited overtime to 28 hours per week for all safety sensitive employees after council members—including retired detective sergeant Councilwoman Anita Davis—questioned high overtime costs and risky long hours. Councilwoman Davis requested a performance audit of the police and fire departments to review staffing levels and expense impacts after overtime expenses reached $3.25 million last year.  The Vindicator
  • Trumbull County commissioners approved a 10-year, 60% tax abatement for a proposed Kimberly-Clark factory on the old RG Steel site in Warren and Howland townships. The project must get board approval within six months before work starts and is expected to boost local jobs and business—officials say it could change the region’s economy.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Youngstown City Council approved a final settlement agreement for a multi-million-dollar wastewater dispute with the federal government that lets the board of control accept a revised consent decree amendment for the city's combined sewer system plan. The council also approved legislation for road resurfacing and vehicle purchases for police, water and wastewater departments.  The Vindicator

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost's office sent warning letters to Zinni Family Practice in Canfield and Youngstown Medical Weight Loss in Youngstown for allegedly making false claims about compounded versions of popular weight loss drugs—claims that imply the drugs are FDA approved. The office said the spas must stop misleading consumers by comparing their formulations to name-brand options like Ozempic and Wegovy.  WFMJ
