COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Newton Falls village installed two Downtown Historic District signs today, completing a multi-year effort to secure the area’s spot on the National Register of Historic Places plus marking key entry points near landmarks. Business advocate Tom Colosimo said the signs, partly funded by AMVETS Post 112, aim to attract visitors.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Weathersfield Township trustees honored Officer Isaiah Brazofsky and Officer Brandon Freer for their life saving work during a March 21 incident on Interstate 80 overpass on Salt Springs Road—when the officers used de-escalation techniques to help a distressed man step away from the ledge and get safe transport to St. Elizabeth Hospital.  WFMJ
  • A local Empty Bowls fundraiser is planned to support hunger relief efforts, and organizers will announce the date, time, and venue soon.  WFMJ
  • United Way held its annual awards dinner on Wednesday at The Lake Club in Poland to celebrate nearly $4 million raised for community programs. The event honored local partners including Aim Transportation Solutions and announced that the Moran family will lead the 2026 campaign.  The Vindicator

  • Mahoning Valley businesses and job markets are growing — local analysts say investments will soon boost hiring and expansion in the area.  WFMJ
  • Yesterday, 700 people attended the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber meeting at Waypoint 4180 in Canfield where local leaders were honored and economic gains celebrated. Keynote speaker Jan Prisby Bryson received the Valley Champion Award as new data showed growth in real estate and jobs.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Salineville's Utica Shale Academy had 28 students commit to learning trades on Thursday as the school hosted guest speakers from Humtown and B & B Energy amid growing interest in modern skilled work, focusing on career paths in welding, heavy equipment operation, and industrial maintenance.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio AG’s Office released settlement details in which the furniture company Burke Decor, operating in Boardman, must end business as Burke Decor LLC and DH Decor LLC and dissolve, pay $385,543.58 for refunds, and remit a $150,000 civil penalty (with $50,000 suspended if they meet conditions).  WFMJ
  • At a Thursday county meeting during National Public Safety Telecommunication Week, officials honored Austintown dispatchers Kerri Humphreys and Christie Zimmer-Rozzi as Dispatchers of the Year for 2025 for their swift response to the Phoenix House fire on Nov. 22 (which extended their shift well beyond eight hours).  The Vindicator
  • Austintown Township Trustees are addressing grass damage at Veterans Memorial Park caused by trucks backing into a nearby business on South Wickliffe Circle+ Trustee Santos estimates the damage at $700 to $1,000 and said the company is willing to help repair it.  WFMJ

  • Two Valley locals were honored by the American Heart Association on Thursday for raising funds and awareness of heart disease in the region — Viki Stoops of Home Instead in Austintown and Katie Zook of Niles McKinley High School led local events that brought community attention to heart health.  WFMJ

  • The Youngstown-Warren area was named the top housing market in the U.S. by Cotality, a firm that uses real-time property data+ it also ranked high among midwest markets and recorded steady growth in labor force and population, marking economic progress.  WFMJ

  • Boardman's boys lacrosse team beat Poland on Apr. 16 after DeJoseph broke records in a close game (his performance set new standards for the team).  WFMJ
