  • The Angels of Easter Seals will host their 48th spring fashion show and luncheon on May 8th at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman—tickets cost $65 and the event will feature fashions from Chico’s, Suzanne’s and 850 Blues along with local celebrities including WKBN News Anchor Stan Boney and Bianca Severino walking with Easter Seal children.  WKBN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • State Troopers closed eastbound I-76 in Jackson Township at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday to let a medical helicopter land after a multi-vehicle crash involved two box trucks, a tractor-trailer and another vehicle, while firefighters rescued a victim trapped in the wreckage.  WFMJ

  • Capriotti's Sandwich Shop will open its second Mahoning Valley location Tuesday, April 29 at 2484 Niles-Cortland Road—expanding its dining options for local customers.  WFMJ
  • US Gypsum Corp announced the permanent closure of its Phillips Manufacturing plant in Niles, citing financial challenges and shifting market conditions (+a review of operations forced the difficult decision+). The company said it will offer career transition workshops and severance packages to support affected workers.  The Vindicator

CRIME NEWS

  • Andre Bailey, a 40-year-old Youngstown man, was convicted on charges including aggravated murder after he shot Reynaldo Hernandez on Bott Street in October 2024 following an accusation that Hernandez stole his money—his sentencing will be held Thursday afternoon before Judge Scott Krichbaum.  WFMJ
  • Campbell police are seeking Dontavious Frazier—last seen wearing a gray Polo t-shirt, gray shorts, and black shoes at O'Reilley's Auto Parts on McCartney Road around 1 p.m. on April 16—after his brother said he is bipolar and not taking his medications.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers met with county commissioners Thursday morning to raise alarm over the proposed state budget—Rep. McNally said capping school carry-over funds at 30% may force extra levies and limit funds for new school needs. Lawmakers also warned that cutting continuous Medicaid enrollment for young children could hurt families—local officials are urged to share their concerns with the Ohio Senate as the budget awaits a vote.  WFMJ
  • Mahoning County Prosecutor Lynn Maro detailed her office's first 100 days during a Thursday press conference and explained that her team now uses victim and witness testimony before grand juries to increase case transparency—county officials say the new database tracking plea deals has also improved coordination with law enforcement. County commissioner Geno DiFabio and Sheriff Jerry Greene noted her efforts have strengthened collaboration across Mahoning County.  WFMJ
  • Firefighters at Youngstown Air Reserve Station are testing Qwake Technologies’ C-THRU system that uses an augmented reality helmet to provide better vision in smoke-filled areas. The device uses a high-speed thermal camera and live video feedback + it will help improve safety and decision-making during emergencies.  WFMJ
