COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Animal Charity of Ohio is hosting a raffle and adoption event at the Animal Shelter of Ohio in Boardman today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. + organizers report the event comes after a 39% rise in shelter animals this year.  WFMJ
  • Local doctors Dr. Bobby Cameron and Dr. Courtney Cameron repurposed a historic auto body shop at 3511 Main St. in Mineral Ridge into Cameron Pet Crematory. They offer in-home pet euthanasia and custom memorial services for local families (renovations continue).  Tribune Chronicle
  • A new walking trail near Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport will open in June featuring a C-130 shaped path, QR codes with aviation history, and wildflowers, plus a memorial garden honoring pilot Joe Maxin (killed in a June Howland Township crash).  WFMJ
  • Late Friday morning, nearly 100 customers lost power in downtown; 29 outages occurred at Front Street and Market Street, 37 at East Federal Street and Market Street, and 30 between West Federal Street and West Commerce Street. FirstEnergy reported power was restored for most customers by 1:30 p.m.  WFMJ
  • Angiuli's Farm Market opens its spring season today for local shoppers, despite morning fog that may reduce visibility (conditions are expected to clear later).  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local doctors Dr. Bobby Cameron and Dr. Courtney Cameron have reopened an old auto body shop as the Cameron Pet Crematory at 3511 Main St. in Mineral Ridge—providing in-home pet euthanasia and planning to expand memorial services for cherished pets.  The Vindicator
  • Apostolakis Honda in Cortland celebrated 50 years in business when Ohio 64th District Representative Nick Santucci visited early this week and presented a letter of recognition. The dealership, which opened on Elm Road in July 1976, has supported the community through job creation and strong local ties.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Liberty Local Schools received a $45k grant from the Ohio Department of Children and Youth to launch its Kindergarten Kickstart program for students entering kindergarten in the upcoming school year. The program will run from July 20 through Aug. 13 (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) and offer transportation, breakfast, and a snack.  WFMJ
  • Lowe's Foundation is investing $250 million through its Gable Grants program to boost skilled labor training and upgrade equipment at local trade schools, including the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. Local educators say the move will help address the worker shortage and spur enrollment.  WFMJ
  • Assistant principal Michael Daley has been named the new superintendent of Poland Local Schools, as announced by the District Board of Education on Facebook. He will shadow Interim Superintendent Andy Tommelleo to build his leadership *the first internal hire since 1968*.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Runway repairs are underway at Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport after the pavement went 20 years without repaving. The Western Reserve Port Authority said that in the next few weeks, a 30-day intersection closure and a 75- to 90-day runway shutdown will affect flights (per Executive Director Anthony Trevena).  WFMJ
  • Transportation officials will convert the intersection of State Route 165 and Beloit-Snodes Road in Smith Township to an all-way stop on April 29 to improve safety (data shows five past crashes). Crews will install new signs and pavement markings to help drivers adjust.  WFMJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Federal and state officials begin dropping nearly 300,000 oral rabies vaccine baits in Mahoning County today until April 30, with aerial drops and ground distribution planned in cities including Youngstown. Residents are urged to leave baits untouched — follow safety instructions if moved — to help protect domestic pets.  WFMJ
  • Insight Health System has had limited talks with state officials about reopening its hospital in Trumbull and is discussing capital improvements with the building owner Medical Properties Trust — local leaders are also exploring alternative plans to revive the facility.  Tribune Chronicle
