COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nonprofit Dylan’s House, founded by Amy and Kevin Shope, is building homes to help autistic young adults gain independence. The first home will be finished May 1 in Struthers (open house set for May 19) while more projects begin later this year.  The Vindicator
  • More than 100 young anglers cast their first lines Saturday at the Trumbull County Rod and Gun Club (in Mecca Township) during a free fishing derby. Kids learned to fish with free gear provided by the club and an Ohio DNR grant, with parents and volunteers guiding each cast.  Tribune Chronicle
  • A fundraiser was held Sunday at the Southington Volunteer Fire Department to support fire Captain Gary Smith, who has served over 40 years and is battling pancreatic and colon cancer. Community members raised funds with a spaghetti dinner, Chinese auction, raffle, and bake sale — all to assist his recovery.  WFMJ
  • On Saturday, about 125 volunteers cleaned streets and parks in Warren as part of The Greatest American Cleanup organized by Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership, Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District, and AVI Foodsystems Inc. Organizers plan ongoing cleanups through November to boost local participation.  Tribune Chronicle

  • Youngstown Playhouse hosts Mean Girls The Musical today, where director Joe Asente leads a cast performing 'Revenge Party' to reimagine the popular show for local audiences.  WFMJ
  • Today at 5 p.m., Tom Phoolery presents Titanic: The Aftermath, Part Two at Bristol Public Library; registration is required by calling 330-889-3651.  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Boardman Local School District will put its renewal levy back on the May ballot while a freeze warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. today (sub-freezing temperatures could harm crops and outdoor plumbing).  WFMJ
  • YSU held its annual STEM showcase Saturday — featuring nearly 60 projects that demonstrated advances in science and engineering. Senior Meghan Crump presented her biochemistry research, which may lead to new ways to tackle medicine challenges locally.  The Vindicator
  • Poland Board of Education named Michael Daley as the district’s next superintendent, effective in the school year 2027 to 2028. Daley, who has served the district for over 20 years, will work with Interim Superintendent Andrew Tommelleo to ensure a smooth leadership transition while maintaining his role at Poland Seminary High School.  The Vindicator

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the Howland branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library on Saturday, speakers marked the 80th anniversary of George 'Shotgun' Shuba’s handshake with Jackie Robinson, which was the first interracial handshake in professional baseball. Family members shared personal stories that highlighted Shuba’s lasting impact on the sport.  The Vindicator
