- ➤ On Easter Sunday early morning, Austintown police chased an Audi driven by suspect Devin Lopac that reached speeds over 125 mph on Mahoning Avenue—after trapping the vehicle on Van Ness Avenue and finding a loaded handgun with signs of intoxication, Lopac faced charges for failing to obey police signals, improper firearm handling and OVI with bond set at $15,000 and a court return on May 7. - ➤ A 64-year-old man from Warren pleaded not guilty to first-degree felony rape and kidnapping charges over an alleged violent assault in Champion Township earlier this year—bond was set at $1 million and a pretrial hearing is scheduled for April 29. Tribune Chronicle

- ➤ Cornerstone Caregiving in Youngstown is hiring caregivers to support 200 clients—most of whom are veterans. Candidates must have a driver’s license, pass a background check, and work flexible hours—weekend shifts pay more and travel time is compensated. WKBN
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Three local townships were awarded nearly $1 million through the Shine a Light on Dumpers initiative to fight illegal dumping; Austintown will install a barrier gate at Green Briar Township Park, Warren Township will remove debris from a residential area on Bane and Miller streets, and Washingtown Township will add barriers at a site plagued by decades of dumping. Attorney General Dave Yost said the grants, funded by settlement dollars, will help protect community health and safety—local officials will monitor the cleanup efforts closely. WYTV

- ➤ Commissioners are being asked to use $3 million in opiate settlement funds for a three-year program that will help residents in recovery—this plan will cover transportation to recovery programs, jail-based treatment enhancements, upgraded scanners, workforce training, and community service opportunities. April Caraway of the Mental Health and Recovery Board said the proposal addresses the mental health needs of jail inmates, and commissioners will decide on funding in the coming weeks. - ➤ Bonnie Billings filed a federal lawsuit against CoreCivic and its warden — Douglas Fender — on April 9th, 2023 on behalf of her son Montel William, who died from a fentanyl overdose at a private prison in Youngstown on October 31st, 2023. The suit alleges wrongful death and civil rights violations and seeks compensatory and punitive damages; CoreCivic will respond by May 16th. WYTV
