COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Mosquito Lake State Park will host the 4th annual Big Birding Weekend from May 15 through May 17 — a free event featuring expert talks, guided hikes, kayak tours and conservation workshops at several local venues. WFMJ
- ➤ Youngstown State University student nurses raised $500 over the academic year and visited the Rescue Mission on Monday to present their donation + learn more about the facility's efforts to feed and house people in need. WFMJ
- ➤ Veterans’ Outreach of Youngstown was awarded a $35,000 grant from the DAV Charitable Service Trust to expand its Veterans’ Outreach Empowerment Initiative. The funds will support case management, supportive services and financial assistance for veterans and their families at 17 Colonial Drive. WFMJ
- ➤ The City of Youngstown is hosting an open house at the former Chill Can site this weekend. Residents can tour designated areas on Saturday, Apr. 25 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, Apr. 26 from noon to 4:00 p.m. on North Lane Avenue via Himrod Avenue — staff will be there to answer questions. - ➤ The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will end services at three churches this spring for financial reasons — Brendan closes May 4 at 5 p.m., Matthias May 18 at 5 p.m., and Joseph in Ashtabula June 18 at 6:30 p.m. WFMJ

- ➤ Litco International Inc. is set to move its crating operations from a 14,000 sqft facility in Vienna to a 40,000 sqft space on Tod Avenue Southwest in Lordstown by May 4. The expansion may lead to new hires as higher product demand drives increased production. WFMJ
- ➤ Employers will gather at Eastwood Mall for a big hiring event aimed at connecting job seekers with local opportunities. Details on the event schedule and participating companies will be shared soon. WFMJ
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A job fair for hourly hospitality and customer service positions is set for Tuesday, April 28 at Waypoint 4180 in Canfield. The event will run two sessions from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with local employers including Marriott, Panera Bread and Kennsington. WFMJ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Youngstown City School District today appointed three new coaches to lead Youngstown High School sports programs — Marlon McGaughy for men’s basketball, Dwight Berry for women’s basketball, and Alex Hines for volleyball. The new hires will build feeder programs and boost student-athlete development across middle and high schools. WFMJ
- ➤ A dozen area schools earned the Purple Star Award from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, including two Canfield schools renewing their status and 10 new ones recognized for their efforts in supporting military families. Schools meet key requirements for military liaisons and digital certification valid for three years. Tribune Chronicle

- ➤ Township officials and regional energy representatives hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. tonight at the Austintown Senior Center to explain the new electric program implemented through the Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council, which offers fixed rates and automatic enrollment for residents and small businesses starting in June. - ➤ Dr. Ryan Harrell joined Sharon Regional as its newest orthopedic surgeon. He is trained in adult reconstruction and sports medicine and is now accepting new patients at the Hermitage office. WFMJ
- ➤ Otterbein SeniorLife opened a new senior care facility in Cortland on April 22 — the site expands care options for local seniors in the Valley. Leslie Huff provided details on the facility's role in easing care access. WFMJ
- ➤ The Ohio Division of Cannabis Control announced a Class II recall for 40 cannabis-infused gummies from Standard Farms Ohio LLC, sold at dispensaries including Leaf Relief in Youngstown, after soy ingredients were missing from labels. Consumers with soy allergies should return the gummies for a refund (no adverse effects reported). WFMJ
