COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, families can visit Youngstown's National Community Development Day at Raymond John Wean Foundation Park from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. to see dinosaurs, superheroes, bounce houses and interactive games while learning about community development programs — local vendors, food and music will also be available.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In U.S. District Court in Youngstown, a jury found Norfolk Southern fully responsible for a $600 million payout to those harmed by the Feb. 3 derailment in East Palestine—GATX and OxyVinyls were found not responsible—affirming the company's sole liability.  The Vindicator
  • WesBanco announced on Wednesday that it will begin changing the bank sign on the historic Home Savings Building on West Federal Street in downtown Youngstown with work scheduled to finish by May 10. Scaffolding is up — traffic will be diverted as the old sign is taken down from May 5 until the new sign is installed following WesBanco’s acquisition of Premier Bank.  WYTV
  • Construction work has begun at the Premier Bank tower downtown as scaffolding was installed on April 22 in preparation for the WesBanco merger—sidewalk protection will start on April 28 and signage removal will begin on May 5 until May 10.  WFMJ

CRIME NEWS

  • A 73-year-old Wellsville man was sentenced to over six years in prison and received a 33-year driver’s license suspension after he drove left of center in a February crash in Yellow Creek Township that injured four people while he was under the influence — charges included four counts of vehicular assault and one count of OVI.  WKBN
  • Liberty Township police investigated a stabbing at a hotel on E. Liberty Street last weekend—witnesses said a heavy drinking session led to a beer-fueled argument that resulted in one man being stabbed in the stomach and another sustaining a cut on his hand.  WYTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Peter Reday—an associate professor at YSU—died Tuesday night from a medical emergency while teaching his class, and YSU President Bill Johnson sent a letter to students and staff honoring his legacy as a kind veteran. The university flag will be lowered at half-staff for three days starting today as tribute to his service.  WYTV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The American Lung Association report shows the Mahoning Valley’s air quality ranks average among U.S. metro areas—Mahoning County averaged one high ozone day per year and 2.7 days of high particle pollution, placing the region in the middle of national rankings.  WKBN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Trumbull County judge ordered County Auditor Martha Yoder to pay Bazetta Township $80,857.18 plus interest after a cyberattack in August 2024 led hackers to redirect the township's tax revenue by posing as officials—Yoder’s office did not verify the fraudulent instruction. The ruling stated that Yoder had a mandatory duty to distribute the funds and that statutory immunity left the township with no other legal remedy.  WKBN
  • The city board of control is awarding a $2,756,473 contract today to Parella-Pannunzio Inc. to upgrade Boardman and Walnut streets with repaving, new crosswalks, curb ramps and a pedestrian walkway linking downtown to Youngstown State University; the board will also spend an extra $164,986 to cover a 10% increase in the Covelli Centre roof replacement cost due to additional repairs after ice and snow damage. The work will begin in early June and is expected to take four months to complete.  The Vindicator
