CRIME NEWS

  • Jingmei Feng, 54, pleaded guilty yesterday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to charges of practicing medicine without a license and soliciting at a Belmont Avenue health spa where an undercover officer paid $70 for sex and was offered an additional act for that fee—she received one-year probation and acknowledged she understood her noncitizen status could lead to deportation.  WKBN
  • In Warren, Jeremy M. Ruble, 48, pleaded guilty to 18 felony counts—including child rape, child pornography, and corrupting a minor with drugs—and was sentenced by Trumbull County Judge Ronald J. Rice to a life term in prison.  Tribune Chronicle
  • A 16-year-old was sentenced Thursday to between six and seven and a half years in prison in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court—his case began with a July 27 shooting on Woodcrest Avenue that left a juvenile partially paralyzed when a bullet hit his chest and spine.  WYTV
  • Jeffrey Battle, a known drug supplier in Mahoning County, pleaded guilty in federal court to possessing 88 pounds of methamphetamine — he was arrested after a high-speed chase and will be sentenced on July 31.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Howland High School earned the Purple Star designation on Wednesday for its commitment to military-connected families; it met strict criteria with a staff liaison and extra activities—joining other Trumbull County schools as first-time recipients.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The board of control hired law firm Bricker Graydon LLP to advise on the potential redevelopment of 20 Federal Place and approved a $2.76 million contract with Parella-Pannunzio Inc. for downtown street improvements on Thursday—while they increased the Covelli Centre roof replacement cost by 10% and signed an agreement with ODOT for repaving four streets at about $1.28 million, with state funds covering 80% and work set to begin in early June.  The Vindicator

HEALTH NEWS

  • National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is this Saturday (April 26th) and Youngstown residents are urged to bring unwanted prescriptions to local drop-off sites, including locations operated by Boardman, Austintown, Canfield, Beaver, Hubbard, New Middletown, Bazetta and New Castle police departments to safely dispose of expired or unused drugs.  WKBN

SPORTS NEWS

  • Youngstown State’s women’s bowling team won its first national championship on April 12 in Las Vegas and the team was celebrated at Beeghly Center—local officials including the university president, a state senator and the mayor gave their commendations. Head coach Doug Kuberski said the six seniors leave a strong legacy as the team now prepares for next season.  The Vindicator
  • Jamestown senior Karis McElhaney was named Student Athlete of the Week and is an 11-time state medalist who earned four varsity letters in track and cross country. She holds four school records and will run track and field at Youngstown State University next season—her awards show her talent and hard work.  WYTV
