COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rich Troisi, business manager for Local 125 Laborers, urged drivers to stay safe in construction zones as more than $137 million in road projects are planned in the Mahoning Valley this year. He said following speed limits and traffic signs helps protect both motorists + workers.  The Vindicator
  • Youngstown residents can safely dispose of unused medications today at designated local drop-off sites as part of National Drug Take-Back Day. The event promotes proper disposal and community health to help prevent medication misuse.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Keel Infrastructure received zoning board approval last Thursday for its $5 billion data center project near the old Westinghouse building in Sharon. Construction will begin in October as company executives promise a facility that uses about 1,000 gallons of water a day and addresses infrastructure upgrades and noise concerns.  WFMJ
  • Lonardos Greenhouse celebrated 100 years in business on Apr. 24 with a special event at its local site (marking a century of service to our community).  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Youngstown's sixth annual May Day Festival will run May 1-3 at the Calvin Center for the Arts, featuring live music, panel discussions, craft workshops, and vendors. The free event will focus on social justice, worker rights and community traditions with over 70 tables set to welcome more than 1,000 attendees.  WFMJ
  • The Simply Slavic Festival will celebrate its 15th anniversary by expanding to three days, starting Friday, June 26 through Sunday, June 28 at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre. Sunday will feature special programming focusing on faith and family traditions.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • East Ohio College celebrated 22 new nursing graduates on Friday at a well-attended ceremony. The graduates hope to tackle local healthcare staffing issues while Director Danica Ceran said a new hybrid program is drawing more students (half of the graduates have secured jobs) to support growing enrollment.  WFMJ
  • Struthers High School students got the chance to see city development in action on Friday, Apr. 24 at a kayak and boat launch under construction near Bob Cene Park. The outing featured local leaders explaining how various government departments work together to support ongoing community projects.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • CareSource is reclaiming 15% of reimbursements from some behavioral health providers after a routine review found they received payments above the proper 85% rate. The Medicaid insurer will work with providers + set repayment terms to maintain quality care.  WFMJ
  • Since 2015, questions remain over the oil spill in Vienna Township that left residents worried about health and local wildlife after chemicals spilled. State Rep. Sean Brennan will reintroduce House Bill 562 to require disclosures on well drilling in state parks to boost transparency.  WFMJ
  • The Library board will meet on April 29 at 4 p.m. at the Main Library (305 Wick Ave) to review whether the Poland branch should stay on South Main or move to a new building amid community concerns. The session is open to in-person and remote viewers.  WFMJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • State Rep. Lauren McNally announced $52,500 for the Local Office on Minority Health to address key issues affecting minority populations & improve outcomes in the city. The grant was distributed by the Ohio Commission on Minority Health via the City Health Department after a Friday announcement.  WFMJ
  • The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration hosts its biannual drug take back day today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at local drop-off sites to help residents safely dispose of unneeded medications.  WFMJ

  • George Berick of Century 21 Lakeside Realty said Mahoning Valley’s real estate market is booming today. He noted strong buyer demand and rising home values (making it one of the nation's hottest markets).  WFMJ
