- ➤ YSU evacuated Beeghly Center Friday after a pool cleaning mistake released toxic chlorine gas in a tank room—HAZMAT teams from three counties worked to lower the gas levels while one employee was hospitalized, and university officials later confirmed the building is safe for finals and commencement. - ➤ A convicted drug trafficker named Chael Soto was indicted by a Mahoning County grand jury on charges of aggravated vehicular assault + operating a vehicle under the influence after his pickup truck veered off Route 616 in Coitsville on January 25, seriously injuring a 29-year-old Youngstown woman. - ➤ Federal Frenzy weekend returns to downtown Youngstown as the YSU-sponsored event expands to two days with 31 bands across four venues + today it begins at 2:15 p.m. at The Federal where NegativeZen is set to perform and will conclude tonight at 10 p.m. on the main outdoor stage at West Federal and Phelps. - ➤ Youngstown will host the second annual Cinco on Phelps event to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with music, food, live entertainment, and activities. The free, family-friendly event—held on May 4 from 1 to 7 p.m.—will feature five food vendors and local community groups at the downtown Phelps Street Gateway. WFMJ

- ➤ Youngstown State University received a donation of $272,000 from the estate of late special education teacher Evelyn Stephens to support programs through its Kilcawley: Centered on the Future campaign. University officials said the gift will fund key student initiatives (Stephens co-founded a scholarship for teacher education) and build on her long legacy in education. Tribune Chronicle

- ➤ Youngstown officials are considering a DOJ grant to help the police department hire 15 new officers and buy new vehicles; if approved by council, funds will be available starting in July and must be spent by September 30, 2029. Finance Director Kyle Miasek said the grant covers 75% of new hire salaries while the city pays the remainder—officials expect the move to ease hiring expenses. WFMJ
